Password-protecting entire blog possible?

Hi, I am new to all of this so I was hoping you guys could help out.
I really like WordPress.com and the ease of use in creating a blog. The thing is my family and I live halfways across the world from many of our relatives and friends at the moment, so we wanted to use the blog as a way of keeping in touch with them. But we really don’t want strangers to be able to see (however accidentally they reach the page) our photos/videos/texts. It’s a blog for a limited number of people to see.
What I am after is a simple way of adding password protection to the entire blog. Something that does NOT require people to become WordPress members beforehand—some of our relatives are quite computer-averse so if they need to go through the whole process of getting an account yadayada then they will simple pass on the whole thing.
So one single, simple password for the entire blog. Once you’re in, you’re in. Is that possible?

If you password protect every entry with the same password, they will see all posts protected with the same password. Enter the password on one post, and all posts will become visible. That’s a lot of work to change passwords, and you might fat-finger the password occasionally.
Maybe you could just email everyone? Blogger and WordPress require accounts, but theyre free. Typepad can be as little as 5 bucks a month and you can issue a common username and password for everyone to login, but again, not free. Good luck.

Sorry there is no way around them not becoming WordPress.com members they need to be a wordpress.com member to access your private passworded blog.
