If you put the password in, you can still see the page. This happened to me too and I freaked out. Try clearing your browser cache and logging out of WordPress and seeing if it asks you for a password then: it should.

It depends as well on what you are trying to accomplish. If it is just one ‘page’ or one ‘post’ that you want protecting, you can use the password protect post while creating or editing the page or post in question. If you are talking about the ‘entire’ thing, it requires you to make it a private blog. This is done in your Admin => Options => Privacy and then choosing “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose”. Then you just go to Admin => Users and add the people that you want to view the blog. By default, you can add only 35 private users and then require the ‘unlimited private users’ upgrade if you need more. Only the people you add can view the blog this way.

I want to protect my webpage with the password. What i have to do?

Are you talking about ONE POST, or the whole blog?

When you write a post, on the right-hand side you’ll see a line of blue boxes. Click the one marked Privacy and you can set the password in there.

You can’t password protect your whole blog all at once, but you can either password protect every post one by one or make the whole blog private. You set that under Dashboard –> Options –> Privacy.

    I’m having same problem.
Page ‘published’ appears, saved private disappears but entering link in location bar returns a blog page with an Ooops! + 404 message.
Is there a way to keep a password protected page (or post? but it’s a page I want) in the sub-pages list or with a link so that either request the password before delivering the page?

I have the same problem Navasola has (I think): we want a password-protected private *page* to request the password before the page is actually shown, just as it happens with a password-protected private *post*.

When I’m logged in I can see it, of course, but someone else checking on the link I sent, along with expected-to-be-requested password simply didn’t work as they get a 404 error, even before requesting any password.

I use theme Andreas09 by Andreas Viklund, and I have read on the Spanish forum requests of help with the same problem, while using the same theme. Is it possible that this is related to the theme being used?

    Thanks!

I don’t think it’s a theme error; I tried it on my test blog and the same thing happened. Are you publishing the page or saving it? That’s the first thing I’d check (Dashboard > Manage > Pages).

Saving it will keep the page private (even from the pages widget) but I found that’s when I couldn’t follow the link; when I actually published the page, the link worked fine. And setting the password definitely protected it; I could only see it (logged out) when I entered the password. If you have a different browser, try testing it in that; it’s a good way to check.
