Password Protection

    My questions:
    (1) My current WordPress site is a combined website/blog with dynamic features, and I want to change that to just a plain website with all static pages. How do I do that?
    (2) The current site is totally private (by admin invitation only). I want to change the site to make it public, but I want to put password protection on one of its static pages (the page will contain sensitive information that should be available only to a certain group of users). Is that possible? If so, how do I do that?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Are you able to confirm the URL of the website that you need assistance with please?

It’s possible to create static pages via Pages > Add New. You could then add and/or remove pages and items to and from the menu of the site via Appearance > Menu, as so to not highlight the blog and individual posts.

What dynamic features are you looking to deactivate exactly?

The site visibility can be changed as a whole via Settings > General and scroll to privacy > select Public.

Individual pages can be set to password protect in the page settings can be set as seen here:

It sounds like you could be on the cusp of having a revamp of the site – I’d love to know more about the project and what your goals are so that I can make some suggestions on how best to proceed with the site.

    Looking forward to hearing more.

ALEONE89:  Thanks for your reply – yes, I would be revamping the site, which is now entirely private.  It’s for a retirement condo community, and I’d like to convert it to a public site.  It would contain just a few pages for posting announcements, documents, and perhaps a couple of pictures.  All pages would be static and non-interactive (no blog functionality needed).  However, one of those pages would need to be password-protected so it’s accessible only to residents of the community.   The password would be a single, universal one, not user-selected, so it would not need to be associated with individual users or usernames.  The password would be created by the site administrator and provided offline directly to community residents. Another issue: I created the current private site with the “free” version of WordPress.  But the contemplated public version would need to have its own domain name, so I would have to go to a paid plan.  Would WordPress’s “Personal [Hosting] Plan” be suitable for meeting the requirements stated above?

  • Hi there,

However, one of those pages would need to be password-protected so it’s accessible only to residents of the community. The password would be a single, universal one, not user-selected, so it would not need to be associated with individual users or usernames. The password would be created by the site administrator and provided offline directly to community residents.

That sounds like exactly the situation where password-protecting a single page would be appropriate to use. The HOA here at Totoro Acres uses something very similar on their website too. ;)

@aleone89’s suggestion above will walk you through how to set it up. You can also bookmark this for future reference: https://wordpress.com/support/post-and-page-visibility/#changing-visibility

Another issue: I created the current private site with the “free” version of WordPress. But the contemplated public version would need to have its own domain name, so I would have to go to a paid plan. Would WordPress’s “Personal [Hosting] Plan” be suitable for meeting the requirements stated above?

Yes I think this will be a good fit for your needs. It’s worth pointing out that if you choose the annual billing (instead of the monthly billing option) a free domain is included for the first year if you don’t already have one, or a free domain transfer if you do. Additionally this plan will turn off the ads we show on free sites to help cover our costs, and comes with private email support in cases where you prefer not to use these public forums.

I’ve also added a bit of a discount to your cart here if you would like to add this to your account: https://wordpress.com/checkout/lsv2.home.blog

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any more questions.
