Password protection and private page don't work

    Hi there,

I tested the password protection, and something strange happend. The first time I refreshed the page, the password was asked. Then I changed the password, refreshed again… but the page was stille visible. I logged out, logged in, visited home and then the protected page, but still no box for the password. How does that come?

Then I wanted to see the difference of password protection and making a page private. Nothing happened; I could see the page at the front end with ‘Private:’ before the title above the content. How does that come?

And – most important – how can we solve this problem?

The site I need help with is kept away from search bots, so I can’t give the url in this post.

Your computer stores the cookie it receives when you put in the password the first time. So it subsequently knows you have the password.

Making a page private means it is visible only to you. By definition, it will always be visible to you as long as you’re logged in.

In order to see the difference, and that there IS NO PROBLEM here, log out, clear your browser cache and cookies, and try to read either post. You will not be able to do it.

    Hi Raincoaster,

Thanks for the quick answer! About the private page: this should only be visible in the dashboard, not on the front end, right? I could see it on the front end… I guess that’s not correct.

Testing is hard, since my site is kept away from search engines. Therefore I can only see it when I’m logged in. But I trust your answer completely.

No, the private page is visible on the front end.

If your site is hidden from search engines, you can still get to it when logged out. Your site, however, is set to PRIVATE, which means only logged in people can see it.

    Hi,

Okay, so my site acted the way it should. Thanks. I really need to keep my site away from search engines, because it’s for educational purposes only. I use it during workshops. So unfortunately I can’t test it properly.

But thanks again, I know what I needed to know!
