Hi –
You can set this up pretty easily through a password protected page. Only the folks with the password can see those. Here’s how you do it:

Thanks, but your answer did not give me what I wanted.
With your approach, everyone needs to know a specific password for a page. That’s counter intuitive to this requirement. All of my users have a password now. Anybody else cannot see any pages on our site. I want to open that up to folks who would like just general info on our site (some pages, maybe 1 or 2), but there is info private to our association that we don’t want outsiders to see and that is why now all of out site is password protected as each person has their own private password.
Any ideas.
Thanks in advance. Guy

Good Morning Guy –
Perhaps I misunderstood your question. This is how you can set up a WordPress.com site to fit your request.
Create a public site that is searchable in Google and that anyone can reach for basic information. Any sensitive information can be added to password protected pages. Visitors would not need a WordPress.com account to access the password pages, they just need the password.
Another idea is to create 2 separate sites and link them together in the site menus. This way, you could create a private members page. This site would not be discoverable via search engines and you would need to enter a password to access the site. All of the private details can be kept on this page.
This would be a password that you would need to share with the appropriate people. It’s one password to access the pages.
Are you trying to make it so each person needs a unique username and password to access the sensitive pages?

Thanks immensely ! …………but:
Not sure if you are getting it. There are many sites out there where you can see the first page or so without having to sign on with a password. After that there is a log-in button that allows members, customers, etc. to access……….for instance Fidelity investments to name one.
How can I do that? I already figured I could do two (2) sites, one p w protected and one open to public, but that’s twice the effort and cost.
Appreciate your answer.

Forgot to mention……….. I already have a operational wordpress site with all users having to use a password.

Staff is getting it. You aren’t getting the fact that the options available to you for wordpress.COM hosted sites are two in number and Staff has provided both.

So, Timetheif are you telling me that I cannot do what I want to do and that which is done by countless other websites??????

Hi Guy –
There are limits in place with WordPress.com due to our shared environment. It’s not possible to create a member sign in website if that’s what you’re describing.
The options are to use an entirely private website, enable privacy on certain pages/posts of the website and leave the rest public, or add each member as a user on your site.
I do not recommend doing the last option because you would be granting back end access to your website to every single member of your group. They’d also need an active WordPress.com user account to do this.
I already have a operational wordpress site with all users having to use a password.
What is the address of the site? Is it using the WordPress installation with a separate host or is it through WordPress.com? These are 2 different things. https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
