Password Protection of Blog Not Working

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I have edited the settings of my blog page to be password protected. However, it is not applying any password protection to my blog page. Anyone can click on it and view all the content without entering a password. The only place the password protection apples to is pane 2 on the home page. Can you please help me fix this as I have sensitive content on my site that I need to have password protected. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am having the same issue. The box to even enter the password isn’t showing up like it used to. How can this be fixed??

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. • Hi folks, it sounds like you’ve password-protected a single post or page on your site.

Did you mean to make the entire site private? If so, here’s how:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Once you’ve done that, you’ll also want to add viewers under https://wordpress.com/people/followers/ .

I do not want the entire site to be private, just one page on my site. I changed the visibility on the settings of that one page to “password protected” and republished. I then logged out, cleared my cache, and came back to the page and it still is not password protected.

Even though that one page is set to be password protected, there is no password protection happening. I am able to password protect individual posts but not one whole page.

  • @townleel can you link us to the post that is not password protected?

I can see the title and featured image, then I see a password prompt.

Since this feature is not working I have revised my site to allow access to the page but password protected every post. It sounds like you’re clicking in to individual posts which I have had no problems with. Password protecting the whole page does nothing.

For the sake of a test I have reenabled password protection on the entire page (https://brycepix.wordpress.com/welcome-to-brycepix/). It does not restrict access to that page. Anyone can go to the page even though it is password protected.

  • @townleel ahhh okay. You cannot password protect the posts page.

But since your posts would be accessible with direct links anyway, if you want to password protect posts, protecting them individually is probably a better way to go.

Or you might consider making some posts private, then inviting users so they can see the private posts too.

OK, thanks for clarifying. Just for the sake of my understanding then, why is it an option to Password protect the page if that doesn’t do anything?

  • Most pages on your site are static, but the blog page is different. It’s a placeholder for a list of posts.

If the posts aren’t password protected, people will still have access to them.

If the entire blog should be private, you might consider making a separate site, like brycepixblog, and making the whole site private (thus making its posts private, too). Then you can link to it from the main site.

    OK, thanks for the explanation
