Paste Text Broken – Visual Editor

    I have a mac OSX 10.9.4. I use Safari.
A week ago I made a post and had no problem copying and pasting.

    @ auxclass,
    @ druesome,

I reported this issue on July 22 on page 2 of the thread Removing the scrollbar from the post editor one of the worst “improvements” yet,

On page 4 of that thread, druesome claimed in an itemized “quick update on what’s going on behind the scenes” that the issue was fixed, saying,

Copying and pasting issues in the Visual Editor were also resolved. Please test and drop us a report.

But, alas, the issues were not resolved as reported by druesome, and on page 6 of that thread I noted this in a response to his aforementioned list. However, I would like to modify my description of the issue in that thread. I had noticed only that text pasted from WordPad, Notepad, and YouTube (video codes) was being immediately stripped in the visual editor, and that’s what I reported. Today I noticed that the problem is more general. Text pasted from anywhere (that I’ve tried so far) is immediately stripped when pasted into the visual editor.

In this thread, at Jul 26, 2014, 12:42 AM druesome again claims the issue has been resolved,

Glad to report that the pasting issue with the Visual Editor should be resolved now. Can you kindly test it out and give us a confirmation? Thank you!

Maybe it “should be resolved now,” but it still isn’t.

Text can be pasted into the text editor as usual. But that’s beside the point. One should be able to paste text into either the text or the visual editor without jumping through hoops to do so. Presently, text can be pasted into the visual editor IF and ONLY IF you use the “paste as text” button, which until today I did not know existed, and which until July 22 had never needed to use before in the past 6 years though I must have pasted text into a post or page visual editor at least 30,000 times during that period.

Apparently I used the wrong URL for the link to the second claim by druesome that the issue was resolved. Let’s try that again:

    while the issue remains unfixed.

  • Hi there!

Sorry about the confusion regarding the fix. Due to recent and persistent reports of the bug, we recognize this as not fixed, and we are giving it another look.

Same issue here, but I’d add that the video URL appears when I preview my post, not the video itself. This happened when I used ctrl+v and when I typed the URL manually.

I am running the latest Mac OS (which ever large cat version that is) and using Safari as my browser. Thanks. The only way I can get anything to past is to switch out of the visual window and into text window.

bumblepuppies, is the video url on a separate line without any other text?

  • Unknown's avatar

Good question. My question is: Did you use the video shortcode? I use it every time and have never once had it fail.

oops! my question is for bumblepuppies

    @ druesome,

All reports are documented and awaiting a fix. In the meantime, can you please provide a bit more detail on your setups such as OS, browser version and method of pasting (right-click or CMD/CTRL-V)?

    OS: Windows XP
    browser: FF 31.0
    method of pasting text:

    1. highlight text
    2. right click to display drop-down menu
    3. select “copy” from the menu
    4. at the area where you into to insert the text, select “paste” from the menu, or
    5. select keys Ctrl + v to paste text
    6. In FF 31.0, #4 now works — though it hadn’t for a while since July 22 mods — when pasting text from the active WP blog (editor windows, all dashboard areas, other posts), from Google search results, and from other non-WordPress websites (I tried ESPN and Wikipedia). However, it still fails when pasting from YouTube, and from the word processors WordPad and NotePad.

#5 works in all cases that I’ve tried with FF 31.0.

In another thread, I previously noted the same pasting failures with a Google Chrome browser, but haven’t retested with Chrome.

Forgot to close the ordered list, again.

    correction:
“at the area where you into to…” should be: “at the area where you intend to”

@ dandelionsalad: That’s how it was formatted, but thanks for the suggestion.

@ Timethief: Thanks, that worked. Since it’s so easy to use, I don’t even feel like complaining that the old way didn’t work. Half of me thinks the old way was easier and the other thinks making people enter a command is less counterintuitive than just pasting in the URL.

  • @musicdoc1: That helps a lot. Thanks for providing that info! I’ll be sure to provide any updates on a fix as they become available. Cheers!

    @ druesome,

    You’re welcome. But one correction:

However, it still fails when pasting from YouTube, and from the word processors WordPad and NotePad.

Should have limited the report of failure of pasting from YouTube to video embed codes, which was all I had tried. Plain text from YouTube can be pasted as normal.

    Noted, thanks!
