Pasting duplicates image

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,
I think I’ve run into a bug, or changed a setting accidentally. Whenever I try to copy & paste an image to a post, two copies of the image are pasted. Obviously not a serious issue, but I’d like to stop it before it gets really annoying. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks!

  • Hi, that’s odd! Could you confirm which site you’re struggling with, or send a link to an affected post? We’ll check it out.

    Hi Supernovia,

Sure, it was affecting this post I was editing earlier: https://thetrashheap684478761.wordpress.com/2020/12/04/spider-man-2099-20-young-miguel-ohara-3-enter-the-panopticon/ and it seems to have been affecting any posts I make on this site: https://thetrashheap684478761.wordpress.com for about two days.

    Thanks!

  • Can you walk me through the exact steps you follow to add an image to your posts?

The simplest way to add an image to a post is to simply drag-and-drop it from your hard drive into the editor. Or to insert an image already in your media library, select the image block, and then just follow the prompts in the block to select an existing image.

Adding an image to a posts shouldn’t involve any copy-pasting, so it would help to understand exactly what you’re doing.

    Hi Kokkieh,

I simply right click an image, select copy and then paste by right clicking or hitting Crtl + V into a block on a post.

I can start inserting images directly from my hard drive, if you think the duplication bug is unavoidable.

  • I’m not able to replicate what you see, so it’s unlikely that this is a bug. If I copy-paste an image in the way you describe to a post on my site, the image appears only once.

I do notice in your media library that most of your images appear three times, with different filenames, indicating the images were uploaded multiple times.

Please create a new post, add an image the way you usually do, and if the image duplicates, save the post as draft and let us know here so we can take a look at the post. Without being able to replicate this ourselves, the only way we might be able to shed some light on this is if we can see the issue in action on your site.

    Hi Kokkieh,

A draft has been saved for you to look at. I did notice this time, that the image was only duplicated when I copied it from Microsoft’s Snipping Tool

  • Thanks.

Based on the activity log for your site at https://wordpress.com/activity-log/thetrashheap684478761.wordpress.com, you uploaded that image four times over the course of a minute. If you definitely only pressed Ctrl-V once, it means something in your browser or on your computer is causing that action to be submitted multiple times.

What browser do you use? Does is behave any differently if you use a different browser?

Do you usually use Microsoft’s Snipping Tool to upload images? If you’ll pardon me saying so, that’s a weird way to add an image to a blog post – that tool is meant for taking screen shots, and if you already have the image saved as a file on your hard drive, that’s really not the best way to add the image to anything. Much better is to just upload the file itself.

If you prefer using copy-paste over other methods, try instead opening Windows File Explorer, find the image there, and copy it from there. Does this make any difference compared to when you use the Snipping Tool?
