  Is paying for a wordpress theme like Patch ($169 AUS) a once-off thing or per year?

  Premium theme purchases are a one time purchase for the life of the blog while hosted by WordPress.COM. https://en.support.wordpress.com/premium-themes/
  Note that all prices are in American dollars https://wordpress.com/themes/patch and the premium upgrade does not include any premium theme purchases.

  Note that each upgrade applies to a single blog only and that upgrades must be paid in full at the time of purchase. There are no discounts offered based on age, non-profit status, personal circumstances, or any other discriminatory factors.

  You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades

  WordPress.com uses PayPal as the payment processor, and as such, can only accept payment from countries they support: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/

  If for whatever reason, they have chosen to block payment from your country, you will not be able to purchase an upgrade here unless you have a source of payment outside of your country. Note: You can buy a prepaid credit card from an approved country.

  In addition to major credit cards Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Discover, and PayPal https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/ WordPress.com can accept echecks and some debit cards.

  The debit card must have a VISA or Mastercard symbol on it, and should work just like a credit card when selecting the VISA or Mastercard option on the payment form, even though it’s a debit card.

  Note that all prices are in American dollars

  Just wanted to mention that theme prices are localized in some markets, so depending where you live some folks may see prices in their local currency. Accepted payment methods may also vary by location – you can see what methods are accepted on your checkout page.
