    Can you pause a blog in order to change to another theme, and play around with it without affecting what viewers see?

    Yes, you could change your blog’s visibility to “private.”

    Keep in mind that your readers won’t see your site while it is private unless you invite them.

    I’d recommend something different.
    Set up a second free wp.com site like, for example: theachristie29test.wordpress.com
    Make that blog private so only you can see it.
    Then use tools to export your “real” blog to the test blog. (export then import)

    This way, you can continue to post on your “real” blog while you privately experiment with the test blog using the content from your “real” blog.
    When you find the new theme, widgets, settings or whatever else, you will be able to duplicate the setting on your “real” site in only a few minutes.
