Hi there,
If you are using any of the button customizations for PayPal the code won’t work on WordPress.com.
In PayPal where you create your button, make sure to only select a basic button, no drop-down menus or options. Then also copy the link under the email tab, not the button code. You need to add the button link to your own button image on your site.

Thanks but I think I have to try this on a paid for site where I download Word Press. I have tried using it on the actual Word Press site but the code just gets stripped out repeatedly- appears on the editor and disappears when one updates. Thanks for your help

On a self-hosted site you will be able to use the button code that makes a button with drop-downs and different options, yes. On WordPress.com only the simple button will work – the code from the customized buttons are not allowed here, which is why it’s getting stripped out.
