Hi there, concerning sites on WordPress.com:

Can you pay by the month with a credit card?

Yes, you can. It will be a recurring monthly charge.

Or do you have to pay for a full year in advance?

If you choose to pay the yearly or 2-year plan, it will be charged at checkout and renewed automatically about a month prior to the end of the period as long as your payment details are on record.

There are some differences between monthly and yearly plans (besides the cost):
Monthly plans do not include a new domain registration at no additional charge, which is included for the first year in a yearly plan.

Monthly plans are eligible for direct support by email, where yearly plans include Live Chat support.

Monthly plans can be refunded within 7 days of purchase; Yearly plans at 14 days from date of purchase. Full info on refunds here: https://wordpress.com/support/refunds/

If you go to this page https://wordpress.com/pricing/ you can flip between monthly and yearly to see any other change in features.

Hope that helps, but post back here if you have any other question about this.
