If someone stops paying for their wordpress site and their site goes private due to non-payment, can someone else pay for that website to make it public?

Hi! Do you know if there’s an option to pay the site owner directly so they can renew their upgrades? That may be easiest.
A domain name can only have one owner, who would need to pay for any renewals directly. But if you’re an administrator on the site, you maybe able to buy the plan again.

the site is offqc.com. The domain is being auctioned off as it was abandoned due to non-payment (just like the wordpress site has been abandoned).
Is it possible to get this site back online?

Also, because the domain was abandoned and now auctioned off, you can’t access it by going to offqc.com but in wordpress internal system is it set up as offqc.com.

I can confirm that the domain you mention has expired but the site that was associated with it is not deleted, but is found here at the “wordpress.com” address: montrealstreetfrench.wordpress.com
However, the only way you can access this site to take it over is to verify that you are the owner of the site, which involves sending proof of ownership to our account recovery team. You can do that by filling out the form here: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

The owner of the site passed away so I don’t think anyone can provide proof of ownership. He had written 1000+ excellent articles on Quebecois French Language which helped hundreds of thousands of French learners as there is no other place with content like that.
Is there a different process for site recovery for deceased person’s site or abandoned sites? I’m sure he didn’t want his work to be hidden.

We are not able to help with the custom domain itself (offqc.com) as that appears to be a domain that is registered with GoDaddy and connected via our “domain connection” tool. You would need to reach out to them directly to see what can be done with the domain.
However, as I mentioned, the site is available at https://montrealstreetfrench.wordpress.com/ so you are able to visit it at that URL as often as you wish. Free sites on WordPress.com (which is the status of this site now) are not taken offline but will be available forever. We do not take free sites offline unless requested by the verified owner of the site.
