If I pay for my web address through GoDaddy, do I also have to pay wordpress?
That depends on which version of WordPress you are using.
There are 2 different versions of WordPress. What happens here, at WordPress.com is a bit different than the self hosted version, WordPress.org. This guide outlines some of those differences.
If you use WordPress.com (here) you would need to pay GoDaddy for your domain registration each year. Then you’d map that domain to your WordPress.com account and need to renew that mapping through WordPress.com Personal Plan (or plan of your choice).
To use the self hosted version of WordPress, you would again need to pay for your domain registration with GoDaddy. You’d also need hosting. Learn more about our preferred hosts here.
Self hosted WordPress is more hands on. You’re responsible for all of your site updates, fixing anything that breaks, etc… I suggest reading over the Getting Started materials listed on the right of the WordPress.org support page.
