Payment problem: ELV (Germany) leads to unspecified payment error

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to buy the premium package for the blog stated below, using the payment option ELV (the German “Elektronisches LastschriftVerfahren”), which is carried out by Adyen. Redirection to ayden was fine and I was able to enter my payment data there and finalize the payment. After redirection to wordpress.com, I got this error message:
“There was an error processing your payment.”
No further information about the cause or kind of problem was given. I repeated the procedure 2 more times, verifying the payment information every time. During this three tries I tried 3 slightly different spellings of the account-holder-name (which is part of ELV payment details): The exact one (including German “umlauts”) the same in CAPS and a version without umlauts (using the associated ascii replacements like ö –> oe, ß –> ss, etc.) to make sure it’s not a char-encoding related bug.

Sadly I could not find anything about this problem on the forums or support docs. Is there a know problem with ELV payments via Adyen or could the automattic support have a look at the log files to see what the problem is?

Sadly, payment via credit card or PayPal is not possible for this blog, so I’d really need ELV working to send our money to wordpress ;-).

Below are the only accepted means of payment.

WordPress.com uses PayPal as the payment processor, and as such, can only accept payment from countries they support: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/

If for whatever reason, they have chosen to block payment from your country, you will not be able to purchase an upgrade here unless you have a source of payment outside of your country.

In addition to major credit cards Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Discover, and PayPal https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/ WordPress.com can accept echecks and some debit cards.

The debit card must have a VISA or Mastercard symbol on it, and should work just like a credit card when selecting the VISA or Mastercard option on the payment form, even though it’s a debit card.

    More about echecks here:
    https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/helpcenter/article/?solutionId=13054&topicID=11500008&m=TCI

WordPress.com also accept Bitcoin for payment of certain upgrades ( bitcoin cannot be used for domain and premium theme purchases) – you can learn more here: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/11/15/pay-another-way-bitcoin/

Thanks for the quick response. Maybe ELV isn’t listed there because it’s only available for Germany and when German is selected as GUI language? Otherwise, I’m a bit confused, why it’s possible to select and works up to a certain point, when it’s not an accepted means of payment?

    Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having these issues with putting through a payment! Unfortunately I’m not familiar with that error either, however I’ve put this issue in front of the folks who deal regularly with problems like these and as soon as I have any additional information for you I will let you know!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks so far, I’ll stay tuned.

    Hiya,

Sorry it’s taken a while to get back to you! We’ve dug in to this issue a bit and the detailed error which we received states that the Bank ID number which was received was invalid.

Since you seem to have tried several times, we’ve reached out for additional information from our partners with Adyen, however we’ve not yet heard back.

In the mean time, if you could please verify that the information which you’ve entered in has all of the correct account information, that would be fantastic!

    Hi,

the Bank ID is 100% correct (I know that number well), as is the account number – I double checked from other documents and used a few online verification sites like http://www.konto-nummern.de/ to secure the latter.

The only thing that might have been wrong was the bank’s location, for which I used the bank’s head office (the account is held at the head office and the bank id is the same for all offices). After checking with the above site, I noticed that this site showed another location, which I then tried to use in the wordpress.com shop – but got the same error as before :-(.

OK, thanks for the checking for me! I’ll take that back to my guys and see what else we can figure out!

    Any news on this topic?

I don’t wanna seem impatient, but I need to make some progress on the project and need that premium package. If I don’t see any progress here till the end of the week, I’ll sadly have to move to another platform.

Info: I just retried the payment, but the result is unchanged.

    Hi there,

I’m so sorry for my delay in responding. We had reached out to Ayden and were waiting on a response. When we heard back, they told us basically that there was “a very recently changed” bank ID, which was causing the issue. They’ve verified that since we contacted them additional payments have gone through successfully on that bank ID, so it should be working now.

So in short, Ayden recommends that you go ahead and give it another try.

Again, I sincerely apologize for the delay in response!

    Hi again,

I can see that you and WP are trying you’re best here, but Adyen seems to be a bit … slow … and obviously has some problems with ELV. Sure, this method is not really internationally widespread, but sadly it’s my online option in this case.

    > they told us basically that there was “a very recently changed” bank ID

The bank ID that I used here (510 500 15 for “Nassauische Sparkasse”) didn’t change for at least 16 years for sure – it’s the same bank that my private account is on. Not really what I’d call recently. Also, I just tried one more time – with the same result. Btw.: I used the exact same bank ID and account-no. (by copy-pasting from the same file) with another (German) online-service without problems.

I very much appreciate your efforts as well as friendliness (Happiness Engineer is a nice title ;-) ) and thank you for it. Do you see any other chances to get some useful help from Adyen or should we give up? I could probably wait a few more days, if we have a realistic chance, but I neither want to waste more of your time nor mine.

There’s one thing you might be able to improve anyhow, though: If there’s some sort of more specific error message coming from the programmtic Adyen payment-API, it would be really helpfull if the WordPress GUI could give a more specific error message to the user instead of just telling him “There was an error processing your payment.”. Maybe you could forward this as a feature request to the WP.com development team. Thanks in advance!

    Heya,

Sorry to ask, but when was the last time that you tried to run the purchase? In the last day or so?

Also, I think the inference from their message was that the change was some internal one, not the actual bank ID. I’m sorry for the poor phrasing on my part!

And I will definitely pass on the request regarding more verbose error messages. I’m not sure what the limitations or requirements are, given that they might include account-specific information, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask!

  • Unknown's avatar

    > … my online option …
should read “my only option” ;-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    > Sorry to ask,
    No problem :-)

    > when was the last time that you tried to run the purchase?
About 5 to 10 minutes before submitting the post you responded to and the last time before that was 2 or 3 days ago.

    > And I will definitely pass on the request regarding more verbose error messages.
    Thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, thanks! I’m checking in with my guys who’ve been in touch with Ayden just to make sure of a few things, but we may be at a dead end.

Just to confirm, is there any other method of payment which you’d be able to pay with? I know you mentioned before that you’d prefer this, however I wanted to make absolutely certain!

Much to my regret and as I mentioned once or twice this really is the *only* option here, as this blog is for a club which does not have a credit card and renewing payments via paypal with ELV are not possible on paypal’s side. Using my private credit card here and charging the club yearly would at least be very problematic on the legal side (besides being a bureaucratic nightmare).
