PayPal image disappears upon publishing

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have created a ‘buy now’ PayPal button. I placed the code on the HTML page of my post (page), and on the VISUAL page I could see the image very well. However, when I published the post (page), the image disappeared. Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong? Thank you very much. (Also, how do I ‘test’ the button; do I have to buy something myself?)

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    You can’t have a paypal ‘buy’ button on a WordPress.com blog which is why it’s not working. You can however have a paypal ‘donate’ button. See this:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

    If you particularly want to use Paypal for selling something, you’ll have to self-host your blog on WordPress.org instead.

    there are differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Click that link to find out what they are.

    Thank you, but I specifically wrote to WordPress.com about this, and they said it was ‘fine’ as long as it was an item I was making myself (I told them what it was). They ‘ok’d’ the ‘buy’ button with an email response from a WordPress.com staff person. Are you sure that it is never ok to use a buy button?

    I’m sure that it’s never POSSIBLE here. Staff probably thought they were saying yes, you’re allowed, but not yes, it’s possible. The code will always be stripped out. The only code that works from Paypal here is the Donation button code, and then, only the non-encrypted version.

    What we Volunteers who answer questions have to go on is
    1. what’s stated in the support documentation see: PayPal;
    2. what’s stated by Staff in forum threads;
    3. what’s stated by Staff in on this blog

    As dare as we know only unencrypted PayPal donation buttons can be used on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

    yikes! “dare” was meant to be “far” sorry :(

    Ok, so I know this is probably a very crazy question, but in regards to the ‘donate’ button, what are the possibilities for its use?

    1) Only actual donations to charities, nonprofits, etc.?
    2) As a ‘buy’ button alternative?
    3) Other?

    Also, can I make the ‘donate’ button say ‘buy now’? And, do I have to set up a different type of account with PayPal or just create a different button?

    Thanks.

    You say the PayPal code you used disappeared. To my way of thinking that was because it did not meet the specifications set out here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
    Have you read that section?

    If you follow the instructions in the link given by timethief, you’ll notice that you can replace PayPal’s default image with whatever image you want. It can say “Buy now”, “Donate”, “Gimme gimme gimme”, etc. :-)

    Yes, that’s what it says there for sure. :)

    The answer is, 1 and 2. Possibly 3 as long as it doesn’t violate the Terms of Service. I use mine for both donations on raincoaster.com and also to allow payment for events on TheShebeenClub.com and payment for workshops on raincoastermedia.com. I tell people to fill out the amount and tell me which course they’re registering for. It confuses maybe 10% of people, it’s true, but generally it works well.

    Thank you. I just called PayPal with some questions, and they said it was not possible to use their buttons with blogs; at the most, it might work a couple of times out of ten and that I would have issues. They said it was not a policy situation but a technical one (that they are not ‘there’ yet). Have any of you really used these buttons yourselves?

    Sorry, I posted before I saw your answer raincoaster. Have you had any issues with PayPal or just with ‘confused’ customers?

  • Unknown's avatar

    No issues at all with Paypal, except that they screwed over Wikileaks.
