PayPal Labs Beta Fundraising Widget code help

  • Unknown's avatar

    I created a Fundraising Widget in PayPal Labs and naturally it has shockwave and flash code so it cannot be used here. But I was wondering, isn’t it possible to create a workaround, say by using Gigya code? I’ve read about it, but unfortunately as I am not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree and I don’t know diddly about writing code, it’s all over my head. If anyone wants to see what the new widgets are like, check them out at http://www.paypal-labs.com. They are customizable; choice of various background designs, colors, use your own image, etc. – really nice for fundraisers. Anyway, the HTML code for the widget is:

    <object type=’application/x-shockwave-flash’ data=’https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf’ width=’205′ height=’350′ id=’badge03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902′ align=’middle’>
    <param name=’allowScriptAccess’ value=’always’ />
    <param name=’allowNetworking’ value=’all’ />
    <param name=’movie’ value=’https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf’ />
    <param name=’quality’ value=’high’ />
    <param name=’bgcolor’ value=’#FFFFFF’ />
    <param name=’wmode’ value=’transparent’ />
    <param name=’FlashVars’ value=’Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902’/>
    <embed src=’https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf’ FlashVars=’Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902′ quality=’high’ bgcolor=’#FFFFFF’ wmode=’transparent’ width=’205′ height=’350′ Id=’badge03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902′ align=’middle’ allowScriptAccess=’always’ allowNetworking=’all’ type=’application/x-shockwave-flash’ pluginspage=’http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer’>
    </object>

    Thank you so much for your help!

    IDEA
    Ok, i think, since its flash, you can use a flash wrapper to embed it.

    first you need to get this widget onto the internet somewhere (idk how)
    then link the widget to the flash wrapper that you embed to ur wp blog.

    I think you should also read the TOS as It states that u cannot monetize from ur wordpress.com site. I do not know about donations

    Hope I helped. :D

    Yes, it’s presumably possible to do it via the Gigya code, but you’ll have to do the conversion yourself.

    And yes, if you violate the Terms of Service, your blog is susceptible to suspension. Since I don’t know the actual points of the widget, I can’t say whether or not the goal is in violation.

    You guys are fabulous! I can’t say that I know what a flash wrapper is or how to convert it to Gigya code, but I’m sure I can Google it. And if I get completely stumped, I can always ask for help.

    BTW, do you know if there is a WP for Complete Nincompoops book? You think I’m kidding? I wish.

    Thanks for the heads up re the TOS. I am well aware of it, but this is a fundraising tool to solicit donations – a step up from the boring old orange PayPal donate button.

    OK, I’m lost.

    I Googled and Googled and Googled gigya and flash wrappers till my head hurt.

    I confess, I have no idea how to put either one into practice. I need an easy to understand tutorial as I am a helpless and pathetic newbie.

    I wasn’t joking about the “WordPress.com for Numbsculls” book either.

    This is my feeble first attempt at shortcode for the PayPal widget (above):

    [gigya src="https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf"
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="205" height="350"
    flashvars='Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902' allowScriptAccess=‘always’
    quality=“high” wmode=“transparent” ]

    Not surprisingly, with my lousy skills and tiny brain – it doesn’t work. I get this error code: embed_shortcode: is not a valid URL.

    Help.

    This is the ultimate authority on Gigya shortcode: 25 posts on it, in fact

    Thank you both for your help.

    Actually, I had already spent some time on Panos’ website but left after realizing it was way over my head. This time I stuck it out…and lo and behold! I got somewhere! I’m not a complete moron afterall!

    It’s not perfect, the widget is almost there – in fact the framework shows up (!!), but I get an error message on the PayPal widget saying “There is a problem displaying this widget”.

    Here is my second feeble attempt at shortcode (it almost works!):

    [gigya src="https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" movie="https://giving.paypallabs.com/flash/badge.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" wmode="transparent" FlashVars="Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902 width="205" height="350" Id="badge03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902" align="middle" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" ]

    I missed something somewhere. It’s not exactly short code, but I attempted to follow Panos’ gigya shortcode 3 widgets tut as best I coould.I suppose I need to study it further. Do you see anything I missed?

    Thank you both soooo much for your help!

    It looks like you forgot a quotation mark before width.
    (In other words, your flashvars have an opening quotation mark, but no closing mark.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Huh? Oh Lord, I feel so dumb. Can you show me? Please?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Look at your code. See where it says…?
    FlashVars="Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902 width="205"

    Add a quotation mark like this.
    FlashVars="Id=03714900132d012fbb38000d60d4c902" width="205"

    What a dope! It was just that one thing. God, why didn’t I see that! Sorry, I feel like a real do do now. Thanks sooooo much!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Does it work? Lots of people would be interested to know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It WORKS!!! It’s magic!!! OMG, I not a complete ‘tard afterall!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    All it needed was that one extra quotation mark just like airodyssey said! Who knew something like this could be so exciting? Thank you all again. Happy New Year to y’all! I’m happy – can’t ya tell?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Congratulations! You’ve done something nobody’s ever done before, and helped charity in the bargain.

    Not to toot PayPals horn, but the tool is pretty cool and best of all customizable. But of course the best part really is that it’s a nifty fundraiser.

    Thanks for all your help! You guys are fabulous. Somebody should be paying you guys nice big fat salaries for all the work you do. I’m serious.
