PayPal missing from “Add a payment method”
-
I’d like to add PayPal as a payment method in the “Purchases” section of my WordPress.com account (for subscriptions, purchases & other fees I incur).
However, when I log in to my account and go to Purchases > Payment Methods > Add Payment Method, the only radio button option is for “Credit or debit card” (I do have a credit card entered already). There are no other options available, as it seems there should be according to this article:
https://wordpress.com/support/payment/#payments-using-a-paypal-accountThe article mentions the option to add PayPal should appear “If PayPal is available in your area”, the currency is eligible. I’m in the U.S., so I don’t think that’s an issue. I searched the forum and other sources and found people with similar problems, but no clear applicable solution (most seemed related to ineligible country/currency).
Thanks very much for your help.

Hello Mike,
Many thanks for reaching out.
I think there may be some confusion, the PayPal option will appear when a new purchase is made. When a new purchase is made, “PayPal” option will be shown under the “Pick a payment method” step in the Checkout.
As you’re based in the US, this should appear.
That said, I can’t see any active purchases on the account – is there a subscription you’re looking to utilise? (https://wordpress.com/pricing/)
I hope this helps so far.

Thanks very much for the quick reply and the clarification, that definitely helps! Yes, you’re right, I was clearly a little confused (nothing new there…). I’d forgotten about WP subscriptions themselves, and rather was thinking plugin subscriptions, since it was a plugin that led me to this point. For more context:
I’m using the WooCommerce Shipping plugin with our store, and the first attempt to purchase a shipping label prompted me to “Add a credit or debit card” to the WP account to allow purchase of the label(s). The credit card process worked fine, but I decided I’d rather have the charges covered from a PayPal account; that’s how I found the article I referenced.
So I was under the impression I could similarly add PayPal as a Payment Method in the WP account, set it as the default method, and the shipping labels would charge there. I understand now (I think), that PayPal shows up as an option if I’m making a purchase directly within the WP account.
As of now for the label purchases, it charges automatically to the credit card I added; it does not provide an option to run the charge through PayPal (or any other method). The charge simply happens in the background, I assume as the shipping plugin passes the info to the WP account (or pulls the card info from the account).
I hope that makes clearer what I’m trying to accomplish, and where it seems I went off the rails. If you happen to have any suggestions about how to default these charges to a PayPal account, that’s appreciated, but I’m guessing that’s more of a WooCommerce question.
Thanks again for your help and any other advice.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Yes that does sound like you need help with the WooCommerce plugin but have landed on the support forum for WordPress.com sites instead.
We don’t offer WooCommerce on WordPress.com (unless you are upgraded to our WordPress.com Business or eCommerce Plan) so we are not your best point of contact, but the good news is that help is available by contacting WooCommerce staff here:

Thanks!
