trying to pay wordpress for an annual plan using paypal. However, even though i have the required funds in my paypal account, the transaction doesn’t go through and i am asked to provide a credit card , which i dont have. I have contacted paypal and they say, the reason might have something to do with WordPress – i am living in Norway but have changed my norwegian currency to american dollars but it hasnt made a difference.

Hi there,
Our upgrades are all subscription-based, and for subscription-based payments PayPal requires that a card must be linked to the account, to ensure that future renewals will still go through even if there’s no more funds in the account itself. This is a requirement on their end for these types of payments, so we cannot change that.
One option you might be able to use is to purchase a prepaid card from a bank that offers that and link that to your PayPal account, or it might work with a debit card as well.

Amazing – thanks for that! That’s the perfect answer – not even paypal were able to explain that to me!

Yes, sadly, the very idea of what a subscription entails has changed recently. Not so long ago, paying for a subscription meant that when the subscription expired, it was the consumer’s choice whether to renew the subscription or not. That’s not the case anymore.

If you don’t want your upgrade to auto-renew you can disable it by clicking Cancel Subscription on the Purchases page once your upgrade is past the refund period. But auto-renew is activated by default on all plans as a plan expiring can cause customizations on a site to disappear and can completely break a site in the case of domains.
