Paypal / Upgrade problems

I am trying to upgrade my account so that I can map our own domain. I have selected the basic upgrade option and follow the payment prompts for using Paypal. However, when ever I get to the point of processing the payment, I am redirected back to the original upgrade page (on WordPress). I have checked my PayPal account and no transaction has taken place. I have sufficient balance on my PayPal account. Please advise.

I’ve double checked your account and can confirm there are no purchases.
Did you see any error messages when you were redirected to the upgrade page?
I have selected the basic upgrade option and follow the payment prompts for using Paypal
Were you trying to purchase Domain Mapping or a WordPress.com plan?
Once I know more I’ll look into this for you.

Hi, thanks for replying. No there is no error message, it just goes from processing (PayPal) to upgrade page (WordPress). I am using safari… could that have relevance?

Okay, thanks. I just need to know a couple more details:
1. Once you have been redirected to PayPal to submit your payment, do you have any issues logging in to PayPal?
2. When you submit the payment in PayPal and are redirected back to WordPress.com, what do you see exactly? For example, is it a blank page?
I have selected the basic upgrade option
I need to know what you were trying to purchase, so if you could let me know the name of the plan (for example, Personal) or the upgrade (for example, Domain Mapping), that would be great.
I am using safari… could that have relevance?
It could, so perhaps try using another browser to see if the same problem occurs.

I have tried Chrome instead of Safari and its the same problem.
So, I am trying to select the Personal upgrade. When I come to select PayPal as my payment option, the next WordPress page asks me to enter my country and postcode for ‘secure payment with PayPal’. The next page is on PayPal – its says “welcome back [my name]” so I assume that the country and postcode have somehow served as a PayPal login. This page shows me the amount in GBP to be debited from my PayPal balance and ask me to “agree and continue”. It is when I select this, I am redirected back to WordPress, this time to the checkout page.
All I want to do is map a domain I have purchased from GoDaddy. I thought I had to upgrade from a free account in order to do this, but if I can just map the domain that would be great.

Thanks for sending me that information.
The fact that you are getting through to PayPal, suggests the problem is likely with PayPal rather than WordPress.com. But just to make sure, it would be great if you could try one last thing for me.
1. Clear your browser cache and cookies. There are some instructions here:
2. Make sure you are logged out of WordPress.com and PayPal
3. Log back in and try to purchase your upgrade
I thought I had to upgrade from a free account in order to do this, but if I can just map the domain that would be great.
You can just purchase a Domain Mapping upgrade to do this.
If the above doesn’t work. I can send you a manual payment request for the cost of Domain Mapping — this can be paid by card.
Let me know how you get on with clearing your browser cache and cookies.

I have just gone onto the plans section to add a domain, but now it won’t let me proceed through the checkout without the premium plan (which seems to be automatically in my cart every time I go there). When I try to remove it from my cart, it takes me back to the plans page.
Sorry – I’m sure not everybody must be as daft as me…!

You’re not daft :) Sometimes, things just don’t work as expected.
If you tell me which domain you would like to map I can get that set up for you.
In terms of the issue you originally mentioned, we are not seeing any error messages for those transactions. So I’d recommend getting in touch with PayPal to find out if they blocked the transaction you were trying to make — and if they are, the reason for it.
Once I know your domain I can get domain mapping set up for you.
