PDF files no longer open when the links are clicked, or 'view' is selected

Ten days ago the blog worked fine – PDF files in the media library could be opened via the ‘view’ option, or by clicking on blog post links. All I get now (since last Thursday evening) is the intermediate page with the PDF file name – it never advances to an open PDF file that can be read. This happens in both Chrome and Firefox, suggesting some WordPress change is causing the problem, and not the browser. However, and old blog from student teaching days still seems to have working links to PDF files. I’m baffled.

Sounds similar to the inability to open linked WP stored files on my blog.
All my links placed on different blog pages and posts have become inactive and when you click on the “blue text” the secondary screen doesn’t have the commonly seen/same “blue text ” click point to actually open up the document. All the stored on WP systems files can be found in the Media library files and they show linked and attached. Major issue since several of my guests and visitors have report directly this problem which I noticed yesterday. I notice all my YouTube links and stored/attached photos have / still work with no issues.Michael aka pzduke and wargamerabbit.

Will you please post links to examples? I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance because I do not know how to help you. My blog is filled with examples, and ones you can test to see if whatever fix is arrived at actually works. I found it interesting that it’s not just PDF file links that are having this happen, but that it does seem to be just ‘internal’ WordPress library files and not links to external web pages.

The issue appears to be affecting files uploaded to the media library, so .pdf, .doc and similar files that should provide a download link rather than display content.
A workaround for now would be to actually display the file content in the blog using Scribd:
