Penscratch 2 Menu Question

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I have a blog that uses Penscratch 2. Right now I have a fixed front page with a long body of text. I would like to adding some kind of menu with keywords that will bring the reader to specific points in the text, somewhat like a table of contents with links to the appropriate places. I want to make it easier for readers to quickly see the overall contents, and access specific information. If possible, I would like to add this menu as some kind of sidebar to the front page, perhaps on the left hand side, or even as a new page, entitled “Contents” or something like that. Is this possible with Penscratch 2? Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Aloha brunoschull, You could do this with page jumps. This will allow you to create links in the text wherever you want.

You can customize the menu to add these links if you want them to show up there.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions about that!

  • Thanks for helping out, geoffreyshilling. :)

Wanted to also mention that you could add your “jump link” menu as a custom menu widget at the top of the page’s existing sidebar. Take a look at how to set that up:

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for all the replies so far–I am going to play around with these ideas, and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

  • Sounds good, Bruno!

Hi Everybody. OK, I started the process of making this special menu. First, I decided that I want the menu to appear on a separate page–I don’t need it to be in the sidebar, or on the top of the page (I already have a menu at the top of the page, and a custom menu in the sidebar). So I made a new page entitled “Contents” and wrote a list of all the subjects that I would like to include. My idea is that readers can scan this list, click on the subject they want to find, and it will take them to the right place in the full text on the main or home page. I read the link about jump pages, and I tried to make a target and link, but the formatting was strange on the target page, and the link didn’t work :(
Is there a way to do this my clicking on buttons, adding/removing links, instead of manually typing the links with the text editor? If that’s the only way, then I will try again, but before I really go deeper into it, I just wanted to know if there might be an easier way. Below is the address of my website. You can see the main menu at the top of the page. The second item, “Content” has the list of subjects. These are what I would like people to be able to browse and click. The target text would be on the home page. OK, thanks again. Bruno.

  • Hi Bruno,

I read the link about jump pages, and I tried to make a target and link, but the formatting was strange on the target page, and the link didn’t work :(
Is there a way to do this my clicking on buttons, adding/removing links, instead of manually typing the links with the text editor?

So you’ll need to manually type these in, but I’ll give you a few examples here and that should help you get started.

The first thing you’ll want to do is edit the Home page, and switch to the HTML tab in the editor.

As a reminder, here is the example from the Page Jumps guide:

    <p id="unique-identifier">I am the target text.</p>

In your case, you would want the paragraph tags would go around your entire first paragraph. That could look something like this:

<p id="intro">Race is a controversial subject, so I may as well state my views as clearly as possible at the start: 1) there are no significant genetic differences between groups of people around the world, and 2) there are good reasons to believe that we will never find such differences.</p>

Here, I gave the first paragraph an ID of intro.

If you were to use that on your Home page, the link to that ID would be:

    https://raceandgenetics.wordpress.com/#intro

You could take that very same link and then apply it to the Introduction section of your Contents page by using one of the two methods here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/#creating-links-in-the-visual-editor

You would repeat this process for the following sections, but your ID would be different for each section.

I recommend trying with the above example first to get that working. Once it does, keep moving down your list. Create the ID first, then save the changes. You can test the link simply by visiting your site’s address followed by your ID with the # symbol in front of it:

    https://raceandgenetics.wordpress.com/#your-id-goes-here

If you notice that the link you create takes you too far down the page, or too high up, consider putting the ID on a different paragraph and see how that works.

Let me know if this helps.

to dcoleonline and others: thank you for your advice. I managed to make some links work…but I decided that it will take too much time to create all the links I was initially considering. I will keep this process in mind, however, is I decide to to it in the future. Thanks again.
