People visit but rarely look beyond my home page – any tips?
-
Hiya,
I blog, at least weekly, about unique experiences of my life in Bali, Indonesia.I get a small, but acceptable number of people visiting, especially given that I don’t particularly promote the blog. However, I note that most of them see the home page but don’t go any further and I’m wondering – is this normal? (Are there any statistics on ‘normal’ viewing patterns?)
I’m surprised by it because my blogs are: regular, easy of the eye, tagged and I think I use good, interesting and diverse headings such as: ‘A chocolate dilemma – eat it or wear it’, ‘From healing to astral travelling’ or ‘Miss World comes to Bali’.
The chocolate post has received just 25 views over the last 30 days whereas I’ve received 270 views of my home page in that same time (not a huge number, I know, but I had hoped/expected that the proportion of visitors interested in chocolate would have been greater than 10% of total viewers, – or do you think my expectations unreasonable??).
I’m wondering if I could be doing something different to encourage more visitors to view my posts and would seriously appreciate any tips on this.
Thank you in advance.

If you want to increase traffic then don’t listen to anyone who professes there are passive ways of doing that. Increasing traffic to a blog is hard work. If you want your blog to rank well in search engine results then that begins with creating and publishing original content ie. unique content that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet.

Two ways of attracting like-minded subscribers are (1) commenting meaningfully and frequently on blogs with similar content and (2) being active on social networking sites.

If you are using a WordPress.com theme good SEO is a given. However, going beyond the theme what the blogger has done within that structure is worth evaluating. Whether you write informative, persuasive or controversial content learning how search engines work, and how to apply basic SEO to you content will benefit your blog as it will increase traffic from targeted readers. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/10/21/two-seo-videos-for-bloggers/

Follow @TT’s advice – then fix your blog
You have a static page – OK nice picture but it is hard to find new content on your site – I tried – gave up
Get rid to the static page, make that the About Page or something – have your Posts on the front page, so a visitor sees your new content, use the More Tag so people can easily page down and see what you have written and only read
Add the subscribe Widget at the top of the sidebar so if someone likes what you write – they can subscribe and be notified when you Post new content
Also set you feed to summery – seems to me it’s at Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading
