Performance

  • Unknown's avatar

    For two weeks now server performance of wordpress has been deteriorating. I now get to the point where it is not possible to add or edit posts during daytime (Central Europe). The pages do not load at all or do not reload after I send the edited post. None of these problems occurs during night time. However I am not really fond of writing my posts at 3 a.m.

    Kind regards

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Can you give times when you see the problems? I am in USA East (WP is in West though they have multiple data centers so one might be nearer to me) and I do not see the effect (I access and post in a variety of times). Pages always load for me unless my ISP is down or has problems (almost always between midnight and 6AM local time when they do maintenance).

    @brechbuehl
    Will you please provide some information about your environment so Staff have something to work with? These are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:
    clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
    using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
    updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
    confirming third party cookies is enabled http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61416
    confirming JavaScript is enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654
    confirming Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
    resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
    then logging in using the secure https:// log-in see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
    trying another browser

    If those do not work we need to know how are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.

    And exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

    I’ve been having problems all week with getting the “read blogs” page to load. First all that would load was Freshly Pressed. Now, not even that is loading. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have to go to my own blogroll to click the blogs I follow.

    Yes a few have had such problems and they were using Chrome browsers. Are you using Chrome? If so which version of it are you using? If not exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

    @timethief

    Thank you for your comprehensive answer.

    As I mentioned, these problems occur only during daytime, never at night. Since I work from home, I am certain, this is not an issue with my computer, nor my internet connection, nor my browser.

    The access worsens at around 7am central european time and it gets normal again at about 9pm. (For US readers, that would be between 1 am and 3pm Eastern Standard Time).

    Be it for that, my operating system is Windows XP, my Browsers are Firefox 3.6.25 and Opera 10.61 and I do not plan to update any of this.

    I’m using windows XP as well. I cannot upgrade to IE9. But my Firefox browser is updated to the most recent stable version which is Firefox 11.

  • Yes, please try updating Firefox to the latest release. Your current version is quite out of date, plus it has plenty of security vulnerabilities.

    @maxmanx

    No plans whatever to update Firefox. I will never, ever accept software that does update without asking my permission. This is the case with the firefox versions beyond 3.6.xx. And no, you are wrong when it comes to security vulnerabilities. This however is not the issue of my post.

    The issue are connection problems with the wordpress server during daytime. The kept worsening throughout the past two weeks and lately I have not even been able to write new posts or edit old ones between 7 am and 9 pm.

    It is quite obvious that this is an issue with the wordpress server and not with my browser, since during nighttime I properly connect as usual.

  • We have no reported problems during that time frame yesterday, and such a consistent problem would have resulted in a more wide-spread issue affecting more than one user.

    At this rate, all that I can suggest is it may be a browser issue, or an issue with your ISP.

    We also cannot support out of date browsers.

  • Also, if you do update to Firefox 11, which I recommend, go to Settings -> Advanced -> Update and choose “Check for updates, but let me choose when to install them.”

    Thank you for ignoring the obvious problem and thank you for not giving any help whathever. And no thanks for diverting and changing the subject to something that very, very, very obviously is not the problem. No browser has a daytime timing.

    Same problem today from 6am to 8am. Poooh, not even access to this forum.

    Kind regards

    @timethief I am not using Google Chrome. I am using an up to date version of IE8 (don’t want to upgrade to 9 yet because my bank doesn’t yet interface with IE9.)

    I went through each of the steps you suggested for brechbuehl. My Worpress.com homepage or landing page, whatever you call it, is still not functioning properly. The New Post and the My Stats tabs work. NONE of the other tabs work.

    This has been an ongoing problem for over a week, all times of day. I am not experiencing any other Internet related problems.

    Suggestions?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @rangewriter
    I have both IE8 and Firefox 11 browser versions. Firefox is my main browser and I don’t have any issues. I suggest that you download a Firefox browser here http://browsehappy.com and see if that resolves your issue.

  • Unknown's avatar

    For IE8, also try switching back and forth into “compatibility view” to see if one or the other will help.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Are you kids in this Forum serious? I posted a report on server performance, degrading to the point where it simply can not be reached anymore! And you twist it into a “browser compatibility” issue.

    Connection failures keep bothering me intermittently and for several hours at a time and yes, they occur regardless of the provider I am using, from home via DSL, from University and on the road from the UMTS network, regardless of what computer and what browser I am using.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It seems to me that the issue is quite obvious: it is your internet service provider. I have experienced the exact same problem when living in the Canadian North with a crappy, inadequate internet connection. If you see them happening regardless which ISP you use in your area, that means they’re all buying from the SAME company, which is inadequate.

    A more modern browser might make the best of a bad situation, but there appears to be little you can do if ALL of your connection options are having the same problem; it means the root pipeline is too narrow to handle the traffic it gets at that period. Up in Yellowknife, there was no point getting online just after kids got home from school OR between 5-7pm when people got home from work.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Will somebody from wordpress please read this blog and fix the crap?

    I just lost another carefully written post. I was using the online editor and when clicking the “Save” button I would get an error message: Server terminated the connection.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’ve already had your staff response, which is update your browser.

    If you are losing posts, use an offline blog editor to compose and THEN upload the composed posts.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @raincoaster

    I do not know who the staff is you mention.

    And no, updating the browser very obviously was NOT a response. It was a plain decision, not to solve the issue and to blame the browser instead. Cheap excuse, nothing but that.

    Browsers do not switch on performance issues in the morning and then switch them off at night time. Sorry, but obviously some people are really far to lazy for competent thinking.
