Permalink Adds "-2" To Page Name?

    Hi,

    When I assign the name “portfolio” to a page on my site,
    the permalink automatically adds a “-2” to the end,
    so that the URL displays as
    https://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio-2/

    Repeated efforts to remove the “-2” via editing fail, as it is automatically replaced…

    Given this behavior, how can I name my page “portfolio”?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    I may have found the trouble…

    Having previously used a different portfolio theme, a “portfolio” page was created at that time and assigned to a specific portfolio template used within that WordPress theme.

    As such, all projects created thereafter had “portfolio” included within their respective permalink – i.e.;
    http://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio/example-design/

    Over time and between different themes, I may have either deleted, renamed or reassigned the page entitled “Portfolio”.

    I’m now using a different portfolio theme (https://wordpress.com/theme/ampersand), which doesn’t use the same technique for presentation. Having copied each of the previously created portfolio projects into new pages, and assigning each new page to a defined Parent page in the Ampersand theme, I have set to “private” all of the earlier portfolio projects – rather then simply delete them.

    So, long story short (is that possible, still?), the use of “portfolio” in the permalink structure is attached to the many previous portfolio projects, meaning that attempts to create a new “portfolio” page are greeted with a modified “portfolio-2” permalink setting.

    If this is indeed the root of such troubles, would I be required to delete all of the previous portfolio projects (now unused, set to “private”), in order to have my new page named “Portfolio” be solely represented by the permalink http://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio/ ???

    Any help is appreciated – thanks.
