permalink adds the number 2

I’ve noticed on a few posts that the permalink has the name of the post followed by the number 2. I can choose edit and delete the number, click ok, and it’s fine. But as soon as I hit Update, to update the change, it’s added back again. What is this number and what might I be doing wrong? Many thanks.
