Permalink page for some uploaded images not sizing down image

I have a Photos page on my blog which I use to upload photos. Then I link to the photo using its permalink. Each image I upload has an associated permalink which is:
    myblog.wordpress.com/photos/thephotoname/

These permalinks display a page with an on-the-fly thumbnail for the image (it just sets the width and height in html, to a max of 300px). I like it because it allows for commenting on individual images.

I uploaded some images today and some of the permalink pages are not sizing down the image, so the image is full size hanging off the page.

I can’t figure out why it’s not working as usual.

Viewing the source, the permalink pages that are sizing the image correctly have (?w=190&h=300″ width=”190″ height=”300″ class=”attachment-medium” ) directly after the img src reference to the image filename, while the ones not sizing correctly just have ( class=”attachment-medium”).

My theme is Thirteen, if that matters. It’s a private blog so I can’t provide a link here.

You can always edit those photos and add that material on the end. Those are just modifications done to the full-size image, so they will work if you just tack them on there in the appropriate format as you’ve copied down. Try it and report back.

I meant to say, obviously you do that under the HTML editor, not the visual editor.

    Thanks for answering, raincoaster.

These permalink pages are not directly editable, as far as I can tell. I think they’re built on the fly. It’s not like a post or page where you get the editor which can be switched between visual and html.

You can get to one of the media permalink pages from the Media Library by clicking on the Permalink link on the far right column.

The other really weird thing I just noticed is that FireFox (2.0.0.14) does not display the image — scaled down or otherwise — on any of my permalink pages for media. Even though it is there in the source. Weird. IE does display them.

Is it Monotone theme? Then you’d have to contact staff. It’s very new and has some peculiarities.

You’re saying this page isn’t something you wrote? I can’t see the Permalink link in my Media Library: I have the thumbnail on the left, and Show on the right. That’s it.

    Theme is Thirteen.

My Media Library has 8 columns:
(checkbox), (thumbnail), media, description, date added, appears with, (comment count), location

The parenthesised ones do not have anything in the header. “Location” is the column for permalink.

raincoaster: I see the Media Library you describe when clicking one of the Add Media links when editing a post or page. The full Media Library is available on the Manage page of the dashboard.

I will try changing to a different theme and see if that makes any difference.

Well, I just tried several other themes. It didn’t make any difference.

Thanks, I’ll take another look. Had never seen the Media Library there.

Looking into this problem deeper I found a workaround:

I noticed that the thumbnails that appear on the Media Library (on the Manage dashboard page), are not sized proportionally for the affected images.

I also found that the affected images are all 8-bit grayscale photos.

If I delete them from the Media Library, convert the images to RGB 24-bit, then re-upload, then the sizing of thumbnails and permalink view is handled correctly.

Wow, that’s peculiar. What a lot of work! I would let staff know tomorrow when Support reopens.

I found this thread, which might be related:
