Permalinks and Domain Mapping
-
Hello there,
I am thoroughly confused.
I upgraded to premium with my wordpress blog. I have http://www.wanderinglimbs.com so I dont need another domain name…. but then it’s saying that this is my domain wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com ?? I’m so confused honestly. What does this mean? Do I need to map wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com ? or not map anything? I just want http://www.wanderlimbs.com
and as far as permalinks, I don’t have the permalinks option in my settings area inside the admin panel/dashboard bit. It’s not there. Do I need a business plan or something to access this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When you created your WordPress.COM site, it appears that you created:
wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com
You then bought the domain, wanderinglimbs.com in order to shorten the URL wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com
Is that correct?

If the above is true, then you do not need to do any mapping since going to wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com already takes you to wanderinglimbs.com.
However, for WP Admin purposes, you will have to use wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ instead of wanderinglimbs.com/wp-admin/
That’s all that note means.
As for permalinks, editing those is a feature in WordPress.ORG only. It is likely that the guide you are referring to for those is dedicated to self-hosted blogs using WordPress.ORG.
What is it that you want to try to do?

If you are talking about changing a post or page slug on your WordPress.com website, that you can follow these directions
Posts: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-title-and-permalink-url
Pages: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/new-page-screen/#page-title-and-permalink-url
(Sorry for the multiple posts. My cat keeps trying to walk on my keyboard as I type and is apparently hitting the submit button)

Okayyyyyy thank you for clarifying that.
I’m honestly not sure what I did when I first purchased http://www.wanderinglimbs.com haha is there any way of getting rid of this dotcom1.wordpress thing all together?

The answer is no. wanderinglimbs.com is set as the primary domain for wanderinglimbsdotcom1.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site. This is normal for any domain mapped site. Read on so your have a full understanding of what domain mapping is and what it does please.
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.
Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made, it and the domain mapping purchase here, each and every year.
Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.
If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
If required, to move content see here https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

We cannot change the structure of permalinks on any WordPress.COM hosted blogs, regardless of upgrades. That can only be done on WordPress.ORG software installs and it’s not relevant in the context of domain mapping.
For clarity please be aware that WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
