permalinks are not working

I have been having problems with the permalinks on my site. To be more specific, the homepage loads fine.
Its only when I want to view a post I get a “Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”
Though when i set the Permalink to “Default” all the pages work fine. But when I set the Permalink to any other settings it comes up with the 404 page.
I have also looked through solutions given, by other members with similar problems. But the solutions I have found so far have not worked.
I have even changed the .htaccess file and changed the .config file and the problem still occurs.
Can someone, please help as this has been annoying me all day!!!!!!!
