Permalinks problems

Hi guys,
New to the site and pretty new to wordpress.
I need help with permalinks. When I have them set to default everything works fine. I can view posts and i have a category widget that enables me to view posts from categories.
When I changed premalinks to custom you can not open categories? “problem loading page”
When you open up a post it opens up about page? bizare i know.does anyone have any ideas what is happening here
Any help would be greatly appreciated
