permanent ads, multi-column

    Hi,

for our German blog Die Ausrufer we’ve chosen the Canard Theme. Under the head of featured blogs on the right side we posted a column with widgets, rss and various other content. Since January we had to take notice, that wordpress.com places ads on head and first place of the right column.

That’s quite incredible. Not only it slashes the format by a frame of 160 x 600 px (!!!), the Ad is furthermore permanently placed and visible for all visitors. This stands against the rules of wordpress.com, which state: “At WordPress.com, we sometimes display advertisements on your blog to help pay the bills. This keeps free features free!” Sometimes, not continuously. And certainly not in a manner to spoil the whole appearance of a blog?

Some weeks ago s.c. Happiness Engineer kokkieh stated: “The team is experimenting with more ad slots and different ad placements on free sites” (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ads-on-the-blog-1?replies=14#post-3069763). And like User janapinkuh we also are “okay with ads, I get them most of the time at the end of my posts, and I know ads help WordPress” (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/toujours-blog-theme-and-ads?replies=2#post-3075157).

At this point we are no longer frustrated but pissed off. Messing with more-column-designs decreases their value for each and every user. Moreover the lack of information of all kind concerning this serious item while choosing themes for a new blog, mingles with the freedom of choice in an unfair way.

No use to praise your pay-models in this case: Your’re changing the free-use-rules in existing free-deals and causing more damage than a Tornado. So stop messing around and tell straight away, if this bug will stay as a feature. We’ll draw our consequences.

    Best, ms

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Marian,

You’re right those ads are ruining the appearance of your blog, therefore, I went ahead and disabled them.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. I’m happy to help.

    Hi fstat,

very much appreciated, so much the better as for the last 4 days the ad had been transferred to the bottom of the right column, changing things to worse.

As I wrote above, we understand the desire for reasonable advertising as you now have recognized our desire for a proper design. The challenge obviously is, to bring them together: How about f.e. a (mandatory) widget with a certain range of individual placement/format?

    Have a nice we. ms

  • Hi Marian,

How about f.e. a (mandatory) widget with a certain range of individual placement/format?

That’s a very good idea and thank you for suggesting it :)

I certainly cannot stop a running train. And it does not solve the second major question: The compatibility of ad-contents with the blog-contents.

*grmbl* Something’s wrong: The footer widgets section, which was 4 columns large and infinite long, is now restricted to 3 columns. Furthermore I can’t add the follow-button or the social-media-follow-us widget, neither in the right column nor in the footer section.

  • Good Morning –

Hmm. I’ll have a look at that. Can you confirm for me which site this is occurring on? Have there been any recent changes to the site settings?

Hi Liz, I found out by myself just now. It was because of an ad-blocker, accidentally turned on, which caused the problems. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Ah, perfect :) No worries at all! Take care!
