Permanently deleted photos still in media library?
-
Hi,
I recently used up all of my 3GB of space not long before I finished my blog about my year abroad. I decided to edit my whole blog and permanently delete some photos to make more space.
I permanently deleted around 50 photos but they are still in my media library, using up the space that I need to finish my blog.
Why are the photos not being deleted?
Thanks,
Kerry

To keep things running quickly around here, files are held in multiple caches through a separate system. These caches are usually cleared within 3 days.
I tagged this thread for Staff to flush the media cache. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Did you delete the photos from a Post / Page or from the Media Library itself?
deleting pictures from a Post or a Page does not delete them from the Media Library and does not free up any space. To free up space you need to delete pictures directly from the Media Library.
Caution: when deleting pictures / files from the media library make sure you delete the correct ones as the will also be deleted from anyplace they are used on your site

Thanks for the replies!
I deleted them from the Media Library, but only yesterday so I hope that by tomorrow evening they will be gone and I will have some free space again!

Thanks for the assist here.@learntofly2014
Please note that deleting images from your Media Library means that everywhere a link to them appears on the internet such as in search engines those who click the links will experience a 404 page not found error message. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/05/avoid-creating-404-pages/ -
Hi @learntofly2014 ,
I’ve looked at list of recently deleted files and was not able to find them in your media library.
That said, @timethief makes a good point. When you delete the files from your library, they stop working in your posts, too, so you will want to be extra careful about what you delete.

Hi again,
So it has been a full three days now and the images that I deleted permanently are still in my media library, and thus it still says that I am using 3 GB of space when I shouldn’t be. What should I do now?

Please send a link to one of the files you deleted that is still appearing in your library. Thanks!

It does. It looks like you deleted this image from the post, actually, but not from the media library.
Can you see the “Delete Permanently” link on the page you sent me? Go ahead and click that then we’ll check again.

Okay, I can see that file was deleted, and it is no longer in your media library. While this browser still had the image cached, I got a “file not found” in another browser. So this one was properly deleted.
I do recommend deleting from the posts, first, then going back to the media library and choosing to permanently delete the image.
Or, consider upgrading — that will add 10GB to the 3GB you have.
