Permission Issues to Blog Site
-
When adding a team member to my WordPress blog site as a Viewer, and they accept my invitation and join, they keep getting ‘Sorry, but you are looking for something that is not here’ when they click on the site although they do see the banner for the blog site at the top of their screen.
I’ve tried setting the team member to Contributor and even Author but they still get the same error message. However, if I change their permissions to Editor then they have full access to the blog site to edit my postings which I’m trying to avoid.
Not sure what to do. I’ve cleared my cache and cookies a number of times and used different browsers all with the same results.
Any one have any thoughts on how to set permissions for a team member for a blog site to Viewer only which would allow them to see the entire blog site but not edit or contribute?
BTW, this is a private blog site. Thanks!
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No

Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out.
This is happening because the posts themselves are set to private.
Out of curiosity, are you looking to only show this site to a select few people? If yes, I’d recommend setting the site in its entirety to private via Settings > General > Scroll down to privacy, and selecting private, and the publishing each post publicly so that they can be visible to just those who’ve been invited.
I hope these are some useful steps thus far.

OK, this is helpful. Yes, I’m trying to give a few select people access to the entire site. I previously had the site set to private.
When I go back and set each previous post to public am I correct in saying that only the few people I selected will be able to see the public posts within the private site vs the entire world? Thanks!

Hi there,
When I go back and set each previous post to public am I correct in saying that only the few people I selected will be able to see the public posts within the private site vs the entire world?
Yes this is correct. I know the terminology can get confusing (public posts on a private site) but as long as the entire site is set to be private as it is now, only people you have specifically invited to the site can visit and see it. For anyone else, if they try to visit your site without logging in all they get is this:

Private posts tend to only make sense on a site where you want to offer a mix of public and private content, but if your entire site is private you can safely remove the privacy setting on individual posts.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
