Pesky and meaningless spam

I’ve been getting an inordinate amount of spam from the likes of Dank Washerman, Harry Muff, Boogsly Squibbles and Glodgy Buglodgy. (????)
Basically the comment is text ragtime…blah,blah,blah.
What puzzles me is that there’s no URL or links involved and I mark them as spam every single time. Akismet has yet to stop them.
Does anyone know if these are bots?
I’m thinking they’re not because of text related reasons regarding the comments.
Any info or advice would be great. I’m losing it here.
I’ve blacklisted a few of the names and that seems to help.

Lately I’ve been getting an increasing amount of the meaningless spam comments for the past two-three weeks. And they are so blatantly advertising spams. Askimet doesn’t seem to be able to catch them. Recently, it’s been so frustrating that I’ve even been thinking that if WordPress is paying for Askimet, they’re really big suckers, because it’s really not doing the job. But who knows, maybe WordPress people and Askimet people are friends just scratching each others’ backs, in this case no matter what a lousy job Askimet might be doing lately. Further, getting a clear answer about anything from Support seems to be getting more and more difficult –it’s begun to feel like trying to get a direct response from the Wizard of Oz, who’s steadfastly hiding behind his velvet curtain!

Automattic owns both wordpress and akismet. It is a constant battle getting akismet taught to keep up with the spambots. Hopefully it picks up soon as I am getting quite a few spam comments as well. Just keep ‘spamming’ them and not ‘deleting’ them so that Akismet learns….

I do ‘spam’ them every single time.
It just pisses me off when I’m away from my blog for a time and come back only to find these skumbags made it through to my comments…AGAIN.
Hopefully, Akismet will shape up.

I see now, my suspicions are partly confirmed. Thank, Trent, I’ll take your advice and just keep doing what you’ve suggested. Thanks much for your quick response.

Without the full Akismet reports that we used to have, it’s hard to have an appreciation for how many spam comments Akismet is stopping, yet another reason to re-enable full reports as an option.

Are you sure they’re not putting in their URL in the comment header? It would be showing up in the same line as the name that they leave, to the right of it.
Actually had 2 spams in there this morning. First time in over a week.
