Hi there, WordPress.com provides support via these forums for free sites and by LiveChat and email for sites with a paid upgrade.
You don’t mention which “flavor” of WordPress you mean, so let me point you to this support guide https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ which give more info on the differences between WordPress.com (where we are) and the standalone WordPress software. That may help you make a more informed decision about which “WordPress” is the best for your needs.
Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi justjennifer – we are not on wordpress yet, we are considering moving our sizable business site to WP. But, I’m not going to do so unless I can get a few minutes with someone at WP on phone.
Here is scenario:
our website gets very few visitors – 200-300/day.
We have a CMS/hosting provider charging $300/month.
I looked into a WordPress +hosting setup, with a theme and plugins, all of which should cost less than $20/month.
Our existing CMS/hosting provider claimed the following, and I’d like to hear WP’s thoughts:
Basically he said that he strongly discourages businesses (like ours, as opposed to blogs or any site that doesn’t do sizeable revenue) not to do teh WP/THeme/plugins route because
A) Updates to themes/WP/plugins cause lots of problems that small businesses don’t know how to fix.
B) WP sites are not nearly as secure as our provider, so we’d be far more exposed to hacks
C) WP doesn’t offer the level of support they do included for $300/mo. -
Thanks for the extra info.
I’ve gone ahead and tagged this thread so that a Staff member can address your concerns, but I’ll also point you to a thread with similar questions so you can see the Staff reply there as well: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpress-org-user-interested-in-wordpress-com/

Thanks Jen!
@udchicago08, as Jen mentioned, WordPress.com currently does not provide phone support. However, if you tell us a bit more about the site you’re wanting to build and any struggles you’re running into we’ll be sure to help get you pointed in the right direction. If you need help with udchicago08.wordpress.com and the forums are not the support method you are looking for then I’d recommend looking at upgrading your site to one of our plans which will give you the live chat support option.

hi,
All plans are also refundable within 30 days.
You can upgrade and then access the live chat to address all the concerns you may have.
@justjennifer’s link above also provides a very good explanation on the pros and cons of Business Plan that you need to be aware of.A) Updates to themes/WP/plugins cause lots of problems that small businesses don’t know how to fix.
You can check whether your theme/plugins are already within the Business Plan. If they are, WordPress.com will fix them for you.
B) WP sites are not nearly as secure as our provider, so we’d be far more exposed to hacks
You can read more about WordPress.com’s security here:
C) WP doesn’t offer the level of support they do included for $300/mo.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
You can test WP’s support during the 30 days.https://en.support.wordpress.com/business-plan/

Hello again, Thanks for adding that information @kosiew.
@udchicago08 – Just to add that the WordPress.com Business upgrade plan is the only plan that gives users the ability to upload 3rd party themes and plugins. The cost of the Business upgrade plan is US$300/year and is paid up front at check out. As @kosiew mentioned, there is a 30-day refund window on everything but domains, so you can try it out and see if it meets your needs.Let us know if you have any more questions about hosting here on WordPress.com
