  Is there anyway at all you can simply add a photo album to the side bar like you can in the Typepad blogs without having to use external sites or links.

  I have actually been looking for the same thing. I found the nextGEN gallery plugin at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/, but I do not think it works with the free wordpress.com account (which is what I have)
