Photo blog help needed

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear Forum,

I am trying to design a blog to run alongside a university photography project. I think it best if I describe the rough outline that I need and let you all make suggestions or give tips etc.

Basically I need the equivalent of a homepage (I’ve started this by making a ‘post’), this content will not change and include a title, an introduction and a set of navigation links to the separate pages.

Each page will have it’s own title, one photo, a brief statement and links to external sites, this next parameter is important, the links should not be duplicated on every page. This is because the sites that the links will take a visitor too have a relationship only with that page. Lastly each page will have a comment area under the image.

As you’ll see I’ve made a little head way but what I’ve done to date is far from finished or ideal but I hope it and the info above give you some idea of what I’m after.

    Sincere thanks for any assistance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You probably should start with: http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

You can link off a Post / Page easily: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

Your content looks like individual picture on a Page / Post – I would probably use Posts for each picture – Posts get indexed quicker than Pages by search engines.

I’m not exactly sure what you are wanting here. When you create each photo page, the links that you include can be anything you want. You create the links when you create each individual page.

Are you talking about having different links in the sidebar for each page, or different links within the body of the page?

I like that you have used a clean, simple and light colored theme. So many use dark colors for photo blogs, and to me it actually detracts from the images, and the high contrast from the background to the image (in most cases) can make it more difficult to view, especially for those with sensitive eyes.

Hi and thanks auxclass and thesacredpath for your help.

Re this point: Are you talking about having different links in the sidebar for each page, or different links within the body of the page?

Each page tackles a different social issue so the set of links associated with ‘photo 1’ would be different to that of ‘photo 2’

‘The Wildwose’ page is the closest I’ve got to want I’d like except I’d prefer that the categories heading that’s currently there (top right) was replaced with the heading ‘Useful Links’ and under that would reside appropriate links to relevant external websites. Hope that makes sense and really do appreciate all your assistance.

What with a dissertation to write, an imminent exhibition of these images (where I’d like to promote the blog) and other uni work to crack on with it’s all getting a bit much. I did buy The WordPress Bible and just glazed over reading through it!

    Best regards.

At wordpress.COM, we cannot assign widgets per page. There are some themes that do not display widgets on pages at all, but that isn’t what you want really although it could be made to work by simply including the links that you want in the body of the page instead of in the sidebar, possibly below the image.

There are also some of the newer themes here that have a “no sidebar” page template, and most of those have top level custom menu navigation which means that your pages would be displayed across the top instead of in the sidebar. Again, you could include the links in the body of the page. See the following link for more information on what themes do not have sidebars on static pages, and which themes have a no pages template.

Widgets on static pages or single posts

I’m afraid that is about as close as we can get here.

Also, here is a link to the custom menu support page.

    Menus

I found “WordPress for Dummies” by Lisa Sabin-Wilson to be easy to understand. It should cover most everything except the latest addition of Custom Menus unless they have updated the book with the 3rd edition.

It was quite helpful to me when I was starting.

Many thanks to you both, with the ‘Bible’ looking a bit heavy weight for me I was considering ‘WordPress for Dummies’ so I think I’ll take that advice.

Is there anyway of me getting rid of the redundant ‘category’ heading that’s embedded on every page? If it’s not required I may as well tidy up the page and remove it.

Many thanks again and best regards.

Not easily, no. You can learn CSS from scratch, purchase the CSS upgrade and hide it, or you can just leave it.

You can add a blank text widget to the right sidebar and that will empty it all out, but that will leave a big blank white space on the right side. Is there another widget that you would like to have in that sidebar?

Perhaps the gravatar widget which you could put your information and even an image of you. Sort of an introduction. See here for a sample: http://flippintestblog.wordpress.com/ .

    Gravatar Widget

You could also write an introduction in a text widget.

That’s a great idea and many thanks.

I feel really dumb but I need to change the subtitle and can’t find it in the dashboard anywhere. It’s where I wrote ‘Folk Tales
share, discuss, assist…reclaiming the Folk Tale’

(You’re equivalent on the test site was ‘
    Flippin’ Test Blog,testing, testing, testing).

Strewth I have a lot to learn but I’m determined to get this up and running as I sincerely hope it will help people. Sincere thanks for your time, assistance and patience.

Settings > general, it’s the tag line. And no need to feel dumb, you aren’t dumb. Everyone is always learning and you are starting out with something new.

You are very welcome, and browse the support pages. They are really good her and have virtually everything you need to know. There is a nice “getting started” section that will get you the main basics.

And as always, the forums are open 24/7/365 manned by a great group of volunteers.

Not only the Support docs, there’s also the new http://learn.wordpress.com but I will also add my voice to the “WordPress for Dummies” latest edition. There’s about 3 chapters dealing with WordPress.com, but the book is laid out in a way that makes it easy to follow.

    Hi Justjennifer,

Is the 3 Chapter WordPress.com worth the purchase then? Only ask as I’ve been stung once having bought The WordPress Bible and it’s now sat here gathering dust :-

  • Unknown's avatar

Check it out first from the library, spend a week with it and see what you think.

    Also, Google Books’ Preview

I bought the first two editions. WordPress changes so fast that now there’s a third. Personally, I’m probably going to buy the third edition as well.

You could always try to make an HTML page, either on WordPress on an external site and link it back to your blog.

I think that would be most effective. For more help visit Google and search HTML tables and you’ll soon see it’s easy to create an effective and easily manageable page! Especially for pictures!

    @sawvell

You need to read the link provided by auxclass above about the difference between posts vs pages.
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/photo-blog-help-needed?replies=15#post-510807

Why would you want a blog made up of pages on other sites? The advantage of using wordpress.com is that pages can be tagged and categorized via global tags. The global tag system makes wp.com very search engine friendly.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/
Also, tables may be one way to design a website, but not the most efficient.

@tess, pages static pages cannot be tagged or categorized, did you mean posts?
