-
I have a site where I get a most of my photos (publicdomainpictures.net). If I use a photo on my blog, even though it’s public domain, they ask that I give credit to the photographer via a link. Not a problem in any way, I’m more than happy to do so and do it prominently on my post. Right now, I give the proper credit at the bottom of my post. What I would like to do is have it under the photo. What I tried do is cut and paste their suggested link and place it under “Edit Image Caption.” Unfortunately, it strips out the url and only leaves the title. Here’s a post of what I was trying to do:
Something peculiar, distinct, and different from other people
If you scroll to the very bottom of the post, you will see that I cut and pasted their suggested credit link and it has a link whereas when I put it in the “Edit Image Caption” it stripped out the link.
My question is, is there any way I can have the link as a caption? It just seems it is more appropriate to have the credit at the photo instead of at the bottom of the post.
Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, I figured it out that the caption is not HTML activated when it stripped out the URL. What I was hoping, and perhaps I was not clear in my OP, is if there was some sort of work around to achieve what I am looking to do.
There must be a way because when I use Zemanta and use one of their photos, a link is attached to the photo. That is what I am trying to accomplish.

Just insert pictures using the “add an image” button, then put the url you want it to link to in the “Link Image To:” field and credit the author in the “Image Caption” field. Then, when someone clicks on the picture it will take them to the page that you linked it to.

just edit the html post, much like you’d do in ms word, just put it on the bottom of the pic

@pancakesforlunch — would that not be considered stealing bandwidth? I may be misunderstanding what you are suggesting but as I understand it, if they click on the photo, the link will take them to the original photo site instead of the uplink to the photo in my media.
@fbauto1 — where at the bottom of the picture? I do not see an area in the image edit area where I can add something. If I add it in the body of the post at the image area, then I can’t post in that area. I want to do what Zemanta provides and that is when I have a photo, there is a link/credit to that photo attached to the photo.
I may open a help ticket and ask staff how Zemanta does it and see if there is a way I the blogger can do that as well.
Thanks.

Yes, that is stealing bandwidth. When someone goes to that page on your blog, that image would have to be retrieved from the other person’s site, which eats their bandwidth. Never a good idea.
You can either put a credit into the caption for the image, or put a credit line in the post or page above or below the image, or you can link the image to the site where you got it. Do note though that you need to look at the terms of use and copyright statements on the site in question and follow those guidelines. I always ask permission on any photo that is NOT clearly in the public domain, or that does not specify use guidelines. It simply is not worth having a DMCA violation noticed filed against you and the possibility of having your blog suspended or deleted.

It is still retrieving the picture from your uplink, but linking to their website. So if they click the photo it takes you to their website. I think you misread my original post. The form I was referring to is what the picture links to, not its source.

I’m with pancakesforlunch. As long as the photo is uploaded to WP.com, you’re not staling bandwidth. I generally put “Photo by Whoever” in the Description or sometimes the alt text, too.
What I suggest, if you prefer a text link credit, is to make a line centered under the image containing the text link.

Yeah, if a copy of the photo is hosted here then there is no bandwidth stealing. If you do the “insert from URL” thing (not host a copy of the image here), then you are stealing bandwidth.

Thanks everybody. I posted on my test blog and this is what I wanted to accomplish (please see photo).

What I found out that really surprised me is if I use a photo from Zemanta, the photo is not hosted here but takes you to the original photo. I had thought that would be considered bandwith stealing.
I guess what I want to do is not possible unless I do it like Zemana photos. I don’t want to do that.
@thesacredpath: I like the site that I get my photos from. It’s clearly marked as public domain however, if one uses the photo on the internet, we are required to give a link back to them which I ALWAYS do. Under each photo, it gives the linkback language which I simply cut and past into my HTML screen. I always add that to the bottom of my post. I wanted to do what I see Zemanta does but turns out that the photo does not host on my media but it appears what I thought was using someone else’s bandwith.
Thanks everybody for your help.

Zemanta generally uses a thumbnail, not full-size, which takes less bandwidth, and in most cases the image is hosted at Wikipedia or some other site that allows hotlinking. They’re pretty good about that sort of thing, but if it’s a concern, report it on their forum. They will take it into account.

Hi Raincoaster,
I’m not concerned. It didn’t occur to me that they were doing something wrong. I just wanted to do what they did but did not realize that the pictures they provided were hotlinked.
I guess what I want to do is not possible.
Thanks.

You can’t have it technically as a caption, but you can put it just below. If you’re good with HTML you can even make the font size smaller.

I don’t know what browser you edit your blog in but I found an extension called zemanta for Google Chrome and Firefox that will find images for you that you are allowed to use on your blog as you write and you just drag and drop it into your post and it will be formated correctly. Here it’s website if you want to try that out: http://www.zemanta.com/
