Photo galleries within blogs

    I am certain this has been covered many times, but that is part of the problem-Too Much Information!
    I want to create a simple photo gallery to accompany my blog. WordPress seems to have quite a few mechanisms to do this, but there are so many, it is difficult to make sense of it.
    There seems to be a handful of categorically different presentation templates (mosaic, slideshow, etc.), and then just endless variations of the same template.

    I know I’m a dinosaur, but I don’t know a Codex from a widget from a plug in, and I just want a simple presentation that shows the image on a simple manner, and allows the viewer to scroll through each image by using the arrow keys.
    I imagine that there would be a blog sidebar that says “GALLERY”,
    and that by opening that link the viewer could choose between
    categories-“Landscapes, People, etc..

    There has to be a simple way-HELP!
    Currently, I am using the twenty twelve theme.
