Photo Gallery as Featured Image?

  Good morning. It used to be that the first photo gallery in a post was displayed as the default “featured” image despite manually choosing an image as featured in a post. This was troublesome for some purposes, but helpful in others. This now seems to have been changed. Is there a way to manually force a photo gallery to display in the Reader? (Don’t you just love it when you “fix” something and then someone wants to know how to undo it? 😉)

  Update: I meant to say in the “mobile” reader. Or am I just imagining that the mobile reader used to show photo galleries?

  So, wait. Is this a question about the Reader on the WordPress.com mobile website or using the Reader in the WP app for X device, or simply viewing a gallery on your site on a mobile device?

  JustJennifer, I see from your follow up questions that I confused you, and I understand why. I wasn’t extremely clear. Sorry about that. The galleries aren’t showing up when I use the reader on the WP mobile app on my iphone6 (but then again, I didn’t see any galleries displayed on the iPhone.) I checked this against the reader on the mobile app on my iPad, and galleries (mine and others) do appear. So I’m figuring that it has something to do with the iPhone, or perhaps mobile phones in general. I thought my memory that they had always appeared on both my iPhone and IPad was correct, but perhaps it’s always been this way?

  Two observations:
  1) I really couldn’t say a thing about any iDevice since I don’t own/use any.
  2) Things change so fast around here that I can’t even accurately say any longer how things used to be.

  FWIW-I downloaded and installed the Android app and I am not seeing any Galleries at all when viewing posts of the Blogs I Follow in the Reader on my phone (Samsung S4).

  And now some questions:

  1. What post format are you using when posting?
  2. Do you use the featured image feature?
  3. Is that featured image also the first image in your post (in single post view)?
  4. If not, do you use a Gallery first in your post?
  5. How does having a Gallery appear in the Reader (or not) have an impact on the traffic on your post?

  There used to be (sic) a Support document or a paragraph in a Support document that explained how images are handled in the Reader and I can’t seem to find it now.
