Photo Gallery – square thumbnails
-
I would like to add a gallery of images in my blog post. I would like the gallery to be made up of small square thumbnails that, when clicked on, take you to a full-size image (not square). Is this possible using wordpress.com? My theme is pilcrow.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t believe you can use the automatic gallery shortcode to make square images link to images with other proportions. We can’t really edit much about how the galleries look!
But you could make a gallery of your images with html table coding. You’d upload and insert your square images into the table. Then link those thumb images to full sized images (which you would upload separately).

How small? Arranged in rows and columns? What would each thumb show, a distorted miniature version of the original, a partial view of it, or a different image altogether?
And if your theme is Pilcrow, then we need the link to the blog in question: the one linked to your username is an empty blog using Bueno.

To the best of my knowledge, you won’t be able to do this using the WordPress.com Gallery feature, at least not out of the box.
Regardless of theme, one option is to create an HTML table with each thumbnail in a table cell and linking each thumbnail to its relative attachment page or image. You’ll need to upload two images for this, the thumbnail and the regular sized image.
Another option is using flickr and using their 75×75 pixel thumbnail to link to your flickr photopage. The code you get from flickr can simply be dropped into the HTML editor with a space between thumbnails.

“at least not out of the box.”
Do you have some ideas to mess with the gallery shortcode?Tables, as I said, are the most efficient, the way things are now.
I’m not especially familiar with Flickr, but in the past, their free hosting/traffic limitation was quite small. So a blog or site with lots of traffic would show no images, just a note about exceeding the limits. Has that changed in the last year or two?

Messing with the Gallery shortcode? Will have to experiment, but it is what it is.
Tables? Definitely
Flickr? What is being linked from flickr to one’s WordPress.com blog would be the thumbnail size only, 75x75pixels. Clicking on a thumbnail would take one to the corresponding page on flickr, which is how the flickr’s thumbnail’s HTML code is set up. (You can see this in action on my primary blog http://justjennifer.wordpress.com/loose-ends/ or http://justjennifer.wordpress.com/my-ez-palette/ )
I suppose it would also be possible to create a Page with the corresponding larger image linked to flickr, but then you’d also have to change the link code in the thumbnail’s HTML and which is technically against flickr’s ToS. Just saying.
