Photo Images Not Appearing
-
After years of everything working I find the images I upload on WordPress are not showing up. They appear in edit but not in preview or actual blog. It began to happen when I was away and I assumed it was a an iPhone or iPad problem using your mobile site. However now I am home and the same problem is happening on my iMac. The site is http://www.hangin.wordpress.com This is so frustrating and I need help to resolve
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, @ta44,
Are the images in your Media Library on WordPress.com?
Just want to start there.
Support Doc for Media Library:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/Let us know if you see them in the Media Library or not. Thanks.

Thanks for responding. The images did upload into my media library and show up when I edit the blog. When I press preview they disappear and show only a white block the size of the image.

Good to know. I am going to tag this thread for staff assistance with the modlook tag.
How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question?
Some issues require staff member help. If you see or add a thread that you know needs staff intervention, you can add the modlook tag to the tags area of the thread to make sure we see it. -
Hi there,
It looks like the problem is with the image captions. If a caption is set on an image, the image is loaded far too the right of the screen, so it’s there, but you can’t see it.
The theme you are using was retired in 2011 already, and the updated version with which we replaced it was retired in 2015.
We retire themes when they become incompatible with newer features on WordPress.com, and while we try to fix any issues that comes up there comes a point where we aren’t able to fix it any more. It looks like your theme is at this point simply incompatible with the code that makes image captions work on WordPress.com, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to fix it.
You’ll either need to remove the captions from your images, adding them as a separate line of text below the image instead, or you’ll need to switch to a newer theme that’s compatible.
Unrelated, I notice that the images on your latest post are huge, at over 3000 pixels wide and file sizes ranging between 2 and 5MB. A 13 inch laptop screen is 1280 pixels wide, and most themes don’t display images any wider than 1200 pixels, so any image uploaded bigger than that (or let’s say 1500 px to have some room to play with) is bigger than a given theme would be able to use and most standard computer screens can even display at full size. (Your current theme doesn’t display images any bigger than about 600 pixels).
A 3000px image at 5MB, would have a file size of only about 400kb at 1500px, which will load much faster, use up less bandwidth for people visiting your site, and will use up less of your free media storage, so please consider resizing your images before uploading them to your site.

Thank you So So much kokkieh, I changed the theme and everything shows up.
Re size of images – I struggle with this as the iMac and iPad don’t make it easy to reduce image size and I thought I could reduce the size in WordPress but maybe not.
Recently I have been emailing them from my phone which gives me a size option.
Thanks again – I forget the complexity of keeping themes up today and had no idea mine had been retired cheers
PS your job description sure fits you -
I’m glad updating the theme worked. And congrats on the new look for your site :)

I use Picasa to resize images, but any image editing software would do. In the Preview app that’s included in Mac OS you’ll find the option under Tools. If you want something more powerful you can download Gimp – a free, open source alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
I’m not at all familiar with iOS apps, but I’m sure you’ll find plenty options in the iTunes app store for resizing images there as well.
While you can technically resize images in the WordPress.com media library as well, I’d recommend rather doing it offline before uploading the images as the media library is not designed as an image editor.

Since WordPressdotcom retains the original image in the background in case you wish to revert to it, I would also not recommend doing this. As @kokkieh mentioned, the best is to resize and optimize before uploading. I’ll just leave this link here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/
It looks like Picasa has been retired (?) but there are other free, online image editing apps that you can use:

It has! I’m extremely upset about that and wish Google would open source it so it can live on. I plan to keep using it until it doesn’t work any more :)
