photo not uploading to media library
-
Hi, re: dncb.wordpress.com, I have been trying to upload a photo to my Media Library; it loads almost all the way (according to upload bar) then freezes – photo image won’t come in, and if I go to another page and come back, the photo was not loaded to my Media Library. Have tried 4 times. The original file is 2.7 MB – have I exceeded my memory limit on dncb.wordpress.com?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there!
It appears as if your space upgrade should allow for the upload of this file. Without the upgrade (which expires on April 3, 2015, you will be over your space limit).
However, your image file is rather large for an image that is meant to display online. Please take a look at the advice about image optimization, so you can be sure your images aren’t larger than they need to be:
Could you please try your upload via another browser, or better yet…a different wifi connection? What you’re describing does sound like a time-out issue, and I’d like to be sure about it.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Hi, Robyn,
Sorry for the delayed response… computer was not available to me until now. I just uploaded the photo successfully using SAME browser (Firefox) – full size, though your comment about size is noted. I do like to be able to click on a photo to see a large size, especially for a group photo where it is difficult to identify people in small photo. I will have to experiment (e.g. is 300 kb big enough to allow for “enlargement”?) -
Hey there!
Great to know about the upload. Sounds like a temporary connectivity issue!
I absolutely understand your desire to have large versions of images available to your visitors!
The main column width of your Pilcrow-themed site is 500px — except in the full-width layout where it’s 990px. So, an image with larger dimensions than this won’t display anyhow.
My suggestion would be to make sure that your images are 990px (at the most), and that they have 72 dpi. Most images you take with a camera and upload will be 300 dpi. That makes the file size quite large, and is only necessary if you were printing the photograph as a hard copy. Online viewing doesn’t require that much resolution.
Any adjustments you make to dimensions and dpi will lower your file size considerable!
I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Smaller file size would help reduce upload time as well as storage space. I usually upload from 20 to 80 pics once a week, so will look for a way of uploading a batch while simultaneously reducing the size to 990px at 72 dpi. Many thanks for your thoughts on this, Robyn.

Hey again!
Smaller file size would help reduce upload time as well as storage space.
I was thinking the exact same thing — you will save yourself a huge amount of storage space! This would be terrific since you’re so prolific.
Best of luck with the site…and the birding!

Robyn, can you help bcoole on this forum? Thanks,

Like bcoole, I’m wondering about “featured image”. I thought this made a header image (different from Home page header) for the specific page you are editing, but when I add a featured image, I see no difference to that page.
-
Hey there!
Each theme works differently when it comes to customized headers for each page. Could you confirm that your Featured Images for your pages are in the format specified by your theme (Pilcrow):
The custom header dimensions are 770 by 200 for two-column and 990 by 257 for wide layouts.
Let me know if the images are that size, but as still not working properly. If this is the case, please give me a link to one of the pages where you’ve uploaded the Featured Image, but where it’s not displaying on your live site after you published it.
Thanks!

Pre-saved 990×257 image worked as “featured image”! I had not given it a big enough image to work with (only 650 wide). Thanks again!
