You can upload a photo and either place it and the text in an image widget or a text widget.

If you prefer you can register an gravatar (avatar) and use the gravatar widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/gravatar-widget/
These are the best practices for uploading your gravatar:
(1) Prepare the image prior to uploading it and make sure it’s no larger than 128 pixels X 128 pixels square.
(2) The image filetype has to be either PNG, GIF or JPG. Make sure the file name contains only letters and numbers – no special characters – and make sure all letters are in lowercase.
(3) Also make sure the image file name has an extension (Example – image.jpg)
(4) Note that there is a time delay while your gravatar image propagates. If you are experiencing problems then go to the gravatar site http://en.gravatar.com/ and read the FAQs as it contains common questions and answers to them http://en.gravatar.com/site/faq/

Some new bloggers find that uploading images is easy to do if you first upload them into a draft post, and then switch from the Visual editor to the HTML editor where you can copy the HTML code and put it in a text widget. After they are done they simply delete the draft post. If that’s your choice then this popular post on my blog provides instructions for doing that. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2008/02/28/wordpress-placing-images-in-text-widgets/

Make a choice – (1) image widget, (2) gravatar widget, or (3) text widget and proceed as the instructions indicate. I have posted every way you can do this into this thread and I’m all done when it comes to explaining, as I cannot explain any more clearly than what I have stated, above and what’s found in the support documentation.
