Photo upload problem with new Fusion theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Am I the only one having problems uploading photos on the new Fusion theme?

Medium photos will not align side by side, only stacked on top of each other. Photos selected as Full 640 x 379 will only upload as Large 1024 x 607. Until this is resolved, I can’t post, as my blog is photo-heavy.

Uploading images in Fusion works as in most themes. The only complication is that the available width depends on the layout you have selected (fixed or flexible width, 0 or 1 or 2 sidebars).

“Medium” by itself doesn’t mean anything: the default width for Medium as well as Thumbnail and Large images is controlled by you (Settings>Media).

Images will align side by side if you set their alignment to left, provided there’s room enough. If you stick to the layout you’ve got now (fixed width, one sidebar), a pair of equal images will show up side by side if they are no wider than 295px each.

    Thank you for replying.

When each medium photo is 295 px wide, with two photos side by side, there is a white space to the right of them, almost 1.5″ wide. I’m trying to get two photos side by side with no extra white space, but rather the two equally positioned across the column width.

Nonetheless, you have helped me, as did not know I could adjust the px settings myself under Settings>Media. I guess it is just a matter of playing around with different px settings until I figure out how to space two medium sized photos to more or less fill up the column width, leaving 5 px. space between them.

I wish the theme designers, or support, whoever does knows about this, would establish what px width is appropriate for each theme. I feel like a fish out of water trying to do this myself, so far without success.

I have tested all themes and recorded maximum image width here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/maximum-image-width/
But the info only applies to single images. More than one images in a row is trickier because in many themes (including Fusion) images automatically get borders and extra space around them. To “space two medium sized photos to more or less fill up the column width, leaving 5 px. space between them” you’d need much extra HTML coding. Easier solution to fill the width well: set your Medum option to 300px and insert the images as a gallery, using this shortcode (in the HTML editor):

    [gallery link="file" size="medium" columns="2"]

Thanks for staying with me on this. I appreciate your time and knowledge.

I’m fairly HTML illiterate, but I know enough to be able to insert space code of 5 px to separate two side by side medium photos. I’m not sure where to insert the code you provided. I have never uploaded from gallery before. I’ll try this out.

And thank you for pointing out to me that Fusion photos automatically get a border, therefore I no longer need to insert 5 px space (I think).

    You’re welcome.

You switch the post editor to HTML and paste the shortcode there. For more info on the gallery feature see here:

    http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/not-the-official-wordpresscom-gallery-faq/

As for the space between images, to fill in the column width well you don’t need to add space, you need more elaborate coding to eliminate the extra space. I might experiment later and let you know.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have been more than generous in helping me. And you’ve helped me increase my skills for managing my photos. I’ll check back later to see if you do experiment and post your results.

I’ll check out the two links you provided to better understand what I’m doing.
    Have a great afternoon.

So… The maximum you can have for a pair of equal images side by side, with just 6px separating them, is 320px each if you override the theme’s default borders, margins and padding. To do that, you need to set their alignment to none, not left or right, and after inserting them into the post you need to change this (in the HTML editor):
    <img class=[etc. etc.]
to this for the left image:
    <img style="float:left;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;" class=[etc. etc.]
and this for the right image:
    <img style="float:right;border:0;margin:0;padding:0;" class=[etc. etc.]
But I don’t think it’s worth it: I would be content with 295, and just set the one image to alignleft and the other to alignright, so that all the extra space is in the middle.

Another piece of advice: instead of uploading huge images (the one I checked is 2560px wide) and relying on the uploader to do the downsizing, it’s better to downsize copies of your images to the desired size in an image editing application and upload those copies. This way you save storage space and you get better quality – see this post of mine:

I have the px setting now for two pics side by side.

One question, this refers back to your first reply, advising me that I control the setting widths (Settings>Media). I did this, putting in the width I wanted. However, when I start to add a photo to my post, I have the “Add an Image” window with the small, medium and large options to select. The px widths in this window are not the same as the ones I set in Settings>Media. So what is the point of my setting my preferred widths in Settings>Media if it is not reflected in the “Add an Image” window?

My very round-about way of getting the px I want is to select Large (for example), install the pic, go back to edit, select “Edit Image”, select “Advanced Settings” and change the px for every single pic. Am I missing something?

Of course the options in the “Add an Image” window reflect your Media settings. If you get different widths in the window, my guess is they are affected by your settings for height. For example: if you’ve set the medium option to 100 for width and 100 for height, when you upload a 200×400 (portrait-shaped) image, the window will give 50 (width) x 100 (height) for the medium option. Since as a rule only the width matters, I would suggest you go to Settings>Media and change all the height numbers to either 0 (= no effect) or an extremely high number such as 2000 (= practically no effect).

But as I said in my previous reply, the best practice is to resize your images to the desired dimensions prior to uploading. If you don’t have an image editing application, you can do it in sites like this:
    http://www.picnik.com/

You are exactly right. When I changed the height to zero, the Add and Image box reflected my width settings.

Pre-sizing my photos is something I have never done, but something I need to learn, as I see how quickly my remaining upload space is decreasing with each new post. Thank you for the supplied links — I’ll learn how to do this before I next post.

Your time and help is greatly appreciated.
