photo upload space not increasing

    I just deleted a ton of posts from a category on my blog that I decided to delete permanently. This posts were image heavy, and after waiting a few minutes, I noticed that my uploading media stats are still the same,
    “2.1 GB used, 905.8 MB (29.5%) upload space remaining”

    Puh-lease tell me that I didn’t need to to my “gallery” first and manually delete all these images. I thought that deleting the posts permanently would magically erase the photos from the gallery too. Seems like I was wrong :(

    I doubled checked my trash and everything is permanently gone, nothing is lingering……

    WordPress.COM has three large server farms that duplicate each other to keep your blog safe – you are probably running into a cache issue between the three – try waiting a few hours and see if you get more space back.

    If my memory is correct there is a time lag on the deletion of items and the reuse of a file name.

    Images uploaded to your blog are inserted in posts but they are stored in your media library. When you delete a post, the media library isn’t affected. So yes, you need to go to Media > Library and manually delete the images. You can bulk delete several images at once: you click the rectangle next to their title, select Delete Permanently from the Bulk Actions pulldown, click Apply.

    Good catch @justpi – they do need to wade through the Media Library – which in a way is good as I have deleted Posts but reused the same pictures in other Posts or the same picture was used in more than one Post –

    @auxclass: Exactly. We would hear many complaints if deleting a post meant deleting the uploaded images as well.

    @bookwormbethie: Forgot to mention that you can make this a little easier if you increase the number of images per page in Media > Library, so that you can select more images at once. Click Screen Options (top right) to change the number. But don’t overdo it or the bulk-edit tool will crash.

    wow, thank y’all for the fast replies to my question — much appreciated!

    @auxclass and @justpi,

    great to know that wordpress.com has all those servers to keep my blog safe :)

    and thanks for confirmation on what i thought. the posts have been permanently deleted, i’ve been blogging for nearly 5 years, and i did not write down the post dates of what i deleted, so it truly is too difficult and time-consuming for me to go through my media library to try to delete the images associated with my blog posts that i’ve permanently deleted.

    but i do appreciate both of y’alls fast replies! thanks again!

    update in case anyone is interested:

    i’m actually in my media library, there is the most awesome button ever, “unattached” images, meaning the post is gone but the images are still lingering. good grief wordpress thought of everything for me! it is so easy peasy to delete the images now from the blog posts i deleted permanently earlier. hurray!

    p.s. oh yes, my upload space is now increasing!

    @bookwormbethie
    I notice that the space upgrade was not mentioned in this thread and just wanted to be sure that you know there is such a thing.
