photograph compression during posting

  I posted a 1.7 MB photograph (3136×2352) from my desktop into a post in the usual way. It winds up 71 KB. Why is there such severe compression during photo posting? Wouldn’t it be more optimal if it wound up at e.g. 150 KB? Thanks Paul @Blogfinger
