Photograph upload issues

uploading images to WP is straight forward but for whatever reason majority of the photos that I attempt to upload to my domain are rejected with a ‘HTTP ERROR’ and those that have uploaded the site gives me an error code when cropping them, or they upload upside down, to the position of the original image.
