I have never received answers in public forums so am not hopeful but will try once more. I have had the same question from the beginning and now I am out of storage space in my free blog so must do something about the photos I have used. I don’t want to upgrade until I get these answers. How do I organize photos? Or, at least, how does WordPress organize them? (Certainly not in the order I published them.) I know have many duplicates and would like to be able to remove those. Can someone please tell me where this answer will even show up? (No because that will also show up in the mystery place.) aaargh.

Hi there, I’m sorry that your earlier forum posts were overlooked.
How do I organize photos? Or, at least, how does WordPress organize them? (Certainly not in the order I published them.)
WordPressdotcom organizes your photos primarily by the month they are uploaded to your site. If you upload them to a specific post they are then “attached” to that post.
I understand that you’ve already discovered that when you delete images from the Media Library the images are also removed from the post they were inserted into. So unless you are completely certain which photo is being used in a post or page, I would not go back and delete duplicates.
You mentioned earlier that you’ve already used 50% of your available free space, so from this point you should be really methodical about resizing and optimizing your images before you upload them. https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/ If you upload more than one version, be prompt about removing the ones you know to be duplicate.
