  I am not liking the new format for writing as I don’t know how to upload my pictures prior to posting and then insert into post. Can I return to my previous format? thank you

  using classic editor is still possible, as shown here:
  https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor

  However, process of adding a picture almost same, you only have to note that pictures and text have to be placed in separate blocks:
  add a Paragraph block for text;
  add an Image block for picture;
  add a Paragraph block for text;
  etc.
